Desert Island Disco - December 2016
He Bangs The Drum
Friday 16th December, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne
Today's castaway sent his mix all the way from Sydney, so isn't very far from a sandy paradise to enjoy his excellent playlist from. Not only is it excellent musically, we also love the way Sye Lohrenz has built in a rescue method to the selection. Everyone needs an exit strategy, no matter how good a party is.
Hello Lauren & Team!
Being an Englishman living in Sydney there are a few things I really miss: my friends, my family, English pubs, English football … I could go on … but thank the lord for the interweb! There are some things I don’t have to miss: 6music - the best radio station in the world by a mile.
I’ve loved 6 Music ever since it came on air when I was still living in London, and your show is definitely my top of the pops. The music played is so diverse but more importantly, never bad. Have you ever played a bad record? If so I’ve yet to hear it.
Anyways, back to the subject; if I was on a Desert Island I’d want big banging drums to attract passing ships - hence the title - so that’s what my playlist is all about. I love a wide range of music but there’s something about a banging drum that really gets my groove.
I used to DJ throughout my twenties and always played tunes with heavy beats, so here are some of my faves. So hard stopping at 22 & I don’t even know how I’d pick just a few of these to play on air - I feel I’d be being disrespectful to all the ones I never played. Still, I’m glad that’s not my job.
I’ve tried to be as broad as I can within the brief so I really hope you like them & really really hope I get put on the island so I can send drum signals to my pals back in the old country - especially Nathan who listens to 6music all day at work & texts me to get the radio on when a big tune gets played.
Muchos love
Sye Lohrenz

The Ten Pence Mix Up
Friday 9th December, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne
Anth Moore is our castaway today, who pulled together this excellent playlist (along with equally excellent track explanations) after a big old slog at work. Next time you have a quiet few minutes, reward yourself by noting down your own and emailing in. It sounds like Anth had fun doing it...
I recently heard a listener called Pete Fowler sharing his Desert Island Disco. It had me out my seat at work dancing. Bravo Mr Fowler, BRAVO. And ever since then I have been meaning to send one in.
I have just finished redesigning our magazine (FourFourTwo) so have had a bit of quiet time this week after a manic few months locked in a tiny office, so have gone for it. I tried to not think too hard about it, it’s just what I have been playing a lot on my phone. In no order to be honest, just off the top of my swede.
I like to call it "The Ten Pence Mix Up"
BIG LOVE

#6Music1989 Neneh Cherry
Friday 2nd December, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

It's #6Music1989 so we're turning back the clock back for the day to celebrate the BBC Music My Generation season entering the eighties. Neneh Cherry's debut album Raw Like Sushi came out in June of that year, and we're delighted she's our Desert Island Disco castaway this week. Here are her go-to-party tunes
• Soul 2Soul - Fair Play: This was the tune for pirate radio ad for the Funky Dread Soul2Soul night on a Sunday night at the Africa Centre in Covent Garden where we all used to all dance the night away.
• Love Shack - B52’s: Reminds me of time spent in Athens Georgia (which is where B52’s hail from) working with Micheal Stipe who’s a good friend of the band.
• My Prerogative - Bobby Brown: My husband directed a cpl of New Addition’s early videos back in the day & we bumped into Bobby @ the height of his fame at a festival somewhere all grown up.
• Left My Wallet in El Segundo - Tribe Called Quest: I flipped when I heard this the first time & I’ve been a fan ever since.
• Me Myself & I - De La Soul: I toured with them with the GorillAz & I knew them from back in the day from Buffalo Stance days. They are solid guys, salt of the earth.
• Fight The Power - Public Enemy: Nuff said…”…Fight The Powers That Be!!!”
• Just a Friend - Bizmarkie: Biz is from the projects just up the road in Queens New York where I spent 50% of my growing up years.
• Beastie Boys - What Comes Around: This tune is from the album which the Beastie’s made to re-invent themselves ‘Paul’s Boutique’. We knew them back in the day, nice guys. Shame about Adam’s passing.
• EPMD - So Wat Cha Sayin’: EPMD, revolutionary rap way ahead of it’s time.
• MC Lyte - Eyes On This: MC Lyte changed things up for email rap for all time. Respect.
• Gangstarr Manifest: My good friends Guru & DJ Premier. Guru died a few year’s back. He & my husband were good drinking partners, we miss him BiGTiME!
• Sun Ra - Somewhere Else: What can be said of Sun Ra? He was a one off. I went to see some of his band play the other night at Cafe Otto & their MD(Marshall Allen) is 92 years young!!! That’s deep!
• Don Cherry - I've Grown Accustomed To Your Face: I miss my Daddy!
• The Ramones - Merry Christmas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight): Thought I’d throw in a proper Christmas tune!
• Devo - I Can't Get No Satisfaction: Devo were the boom!
• Little Louis - French Kiss: House music from the source!
Keep the dance floor going forever on the Desert Island Disco, send your best party tracks to: lauren.6music@bbc.co.uk.
