BBC Radio 2 Artist in Residence - Terms and Conditions

By Applying you accept these Terms and Conditions and agree to comply with them:

1. R2 is conducting a search for a R2 Artist in Residence in association with The Space (a digital arts organisation). It launches on The Radio 2 Arts Show on Friday 10 April. It will close at midnight on Sun 10 May. No applications will be accepted after this time.


2. Artists will be asked to submit:

2.2 An example of their work

2.3 A written submission of 500 words (equivalent to one side of A4) on why they would like this position, and why they believe their work is relevant and suitable for the broad mainstream R2 audience. Within this written submission, artists are asked to look at the series of images/list of events of R2 events in 2014 on the R2 Artist in Residence website and explain what treatment they might consider in covering one of those events.

2.4 You must also submit a budget for their proposed treatment of this event which will be in accordance with the budget parameters outlined below.


3. A panel including Miriam O’Keefe (Director of the BBC Performing Arts Fund), Jonty Claypole (BBC Director of Arts), Helen Thomas (Editor of The Radio 2 Arts Show) and Sandeep Mahal, Director, The Space will select the shortlist – based on a criteria of passion and knowledge of R2’s output; artists previous track record; originality of the ideas; suitability of the work for a mainstream R2 audience; and evidence of digital opportunities around the presentation of the work; evidence that the R2 event that the artist chooses to provide an artistic treatment for in their application will be achievable within the budget specified below, including any third party clearances (as relevant).


4. Following the shortlisting process, the successful applicants will be invited to an interview on Friday 5th June 2015 (you will be notified of the exact time) – the BBC will cover reasonable travel expenses. The final interview panel comprises of Sir Peter Blake; Claudia Winkleman; Lewis Carnie (Head of Programmes R2); and a representative from The Space. The result will be announced in The R2 Arts Show on Friday 12 June and on The Space website.


5. The search is only open to professional artists – defined as someone who makes more than half their annual income from creative endeavour.


6. We are looking for an artist that works in any medium – they could be a poet, painter, sculptor, audio/visual/multi-media artist. However, we are not looking for a musician. The artistic must have lived and worked in the UK for a minimum of 3 years and be an individual (as opposed to a group of artists). The artistic responses to the R2 events i.e."Works", should each be able to be presented in digital form and will be shown on bbc.co.uk (including R2 website and BBC Art Online) and thespace.org. The Space would supply some interactive/technical expertise if required. The BBC will also provide reasonable access to the R2 studios if required (and subject to R2's business requirements).


7. The recipient is granted a golden pass, which gives access to R2 events over a 12 month period (i.e. events which R2 either organises or 3rd party events which R2 covers). The first of these they have the option of attending will be Glastonbury 2015. They are not obliged to attend every event, they can pick and choose what they want to go to, but they must attend in person the event(s) that they base the Works around. They should create a minimum of four Works relating to R2 events throughout the 12 month period which must be achievable within the budget set out below (i.e. £20k total inclusive of all expenses). The Works should be celebratory in tone of the events attended, and suitable for a mainstream R2 audience.


8. We will provide a ‘mentor’ relevant to the field in which they work. This may be a member of the BBC’s ‘Creative Leaders' or a leading figure in the world of Culture and the Arts relevant to your field.


9. Working within R2's editorial remit the artist will have the opportunity to appear on R2 across the 12 month period and the artist will be required to appear on at least two R2 programmes.


10. The BBC (on behalf of the Space) will award a bursary (£15k) and will cover materials for the Works up to a maximum of £20k in total, on a cash flow basis to be agreed. As part of the £20k (and deductible therefrom) Artist will be entitled to a per diem and reasonable verifiable travel expenses when attending the R2 events and will also cover any third party clearance costs. We would award 75% of the bursary upfront, and would award the final 25% on completion of the 12 month period when the four works of arts have all been delivered. These costs are covered by The Space but will be paid to the Artist via the BBC. The artist is welcome to source bona fide match funding to contribute to the the total cost of the Works, on top of the money provided by The Space/BBC, but this is not a requirement and the BBC reserves the right to approve such funding.


11. The artists retains ownership of the copyright in their works. The BBC will have the perpetual right to: (i) exhibit the works on its premises or in connection with R2 events for not less than 30 days/year; (ii) include the works in Radio/TV broadcasts and, (iii) use the works online, and on all of the BBC's Public Services. The works will also be simultaneously displayed on The Space website.

The Space commissions digital art, seeking out and profiling artists and their work on www.thespace.org and through partnerships with the cultural and technology sectors. The Space is a not-for-profit public service for artists and audiences, founded by the BBC and Arts Council England.


12. Additional terms:

12.1. No formal training or qualifications are required.

12.2. Artist applying must be aged 18 or above on 10 April 2015. Proof of age and identity may be requested.

12.3. Nobody involved in your project can be employed or contracted by Radio 2 or the BBC or be closely related to someone who is.

12.4. Nobody involved in your project can be employed or contracted by The Space or related to someone who is.

12.5. The deadline for submissions is Midnight 10 May 2015. We will not accept late entries. We are not responsible for submissions that are lost, damaged or late due to computer, network or telecommunications failure.

12.6. We will acknowledge your submission when we receive it with an email. Your submission will then be assessed using the criteria and selection process.

12.7. If your submission is shortlisted, we will inform you on or before 21 May 2015. Those shortlisted will be invited to the final judging panel on Friday 5 June 2015 between 9.30-11.30 (you will be notified the exact time). Please make sure you are available to attend this date.

12.8. Successful applicants will be notified in as soon as practical but by the middle of June 2015.

12.9. The decision of Radio 2 and The Space and our Judges about eligibility, the selection of successful submissions and the amount and type of support to be provided is final. We will not enter into correspondence about submissions that are not selected.

12.10 By submitting your proposal you confirm that all information submitted by you is true, accurate and complete.

12.11 If we choose to commission your work, you agree to authorise Radio 2 and The Space to conduct background checks in order to verify any of the information you have supplied. You agree to provide us with any assistance or further information necessary to do this.

12.12 Radio 2 and The Space will only use the information that you provide, including your personal data, for the purpose of administering the Artist-in-Residence scheme and selection process. We reserve the right to share the information with our partner organisations and other individuals only for the purposes of administering and evaluating the selection process.

12.13 You agree to keep all information relating to your submission and the selection process confidential. You will not make any public statement about your submission or the selection process without getting our approval beforehand in writing.

12.14 We are not liable for any direct or indirect loss or liability, costs, claims, taxes, charges or expenses resulting from you taking part in the Artist-in-Residence scheme.

12.15 The BBC will comply the Works for publication on the BBC (i.e. ensure it’s suitability, without incurring any additional costs)).
