Q & A

When I write I like to...

...start the day by rereading and editing what I wrote the day before. I like to write in absolute silence with no distractions. A cup of coffee at hand doesn't hurt either.

The book that inspired me to write must have been...

...it's impossible to choose just one book. My parents read aloud to my sister and me almost every day when we were young and that's what inspired me to write. Some of our favorite picture books were the books by Beatrix Potter, the Babar books, the stories by Margaret Wise Brown, The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton, Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag, Caps For Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina, and The Rabbits' Wedding by Garth Williams. Also, our father told us stories about a little man named Mr. Piebald who lived in the woods behind our house in an apartment in a tree.

My specialty in the kitchen is...

...cereal. I can't cook.

My current view is of...

...the woods in front of my house. I can see pine trees, ash trees, and birch trees. At the moment, a junco is perched on the limb of an ash tree.

One of my favorite writers is...

...John Steinbeck because I love the settings he creates and how the settings inform his stories. I also love John Irving and Carson McCullers. My all-time favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

One thing people don't know about me is...

...my passions, apart from writing, are sewing and needlework.

The thing I love most about words is...

...that they belong to everybody but you can make them your own.
