5 tough places to work in hot weather

For many of us, a sunny day equals picnics, sunbathing, beach games and reading a good book.
But for the unfortunate ones stuck at work, sunny weather can be anything but glorious.
So which workplaces are tough to work in during a hot spell? We put the question to our listeners - this is what they said...

1. A hot kitchen

Richard is a chef and owns a restaurant in Norwich.
"Kitchens are known for being hot at the best of times, temperatures rising and temperatures frayed", he said.
He has a novel way to keep cool: "Baby wipes in the fridge is our saviour of the day! Half-way through service - bit of a wipe on the head - that changed our lives.
"We keep on water, keep away from fizzy drinks. The bottom of our trousers get hacked off, we end up looking like dodgy pirates! Iced lollies to keep us going.
"The first couple of days of hot weather in kitchens are the hardest, then your body acclimatises to it. But a cold beer outside the restaurant at the end of the night is what we’re all looking forward to."
2. Steelworks

Steel worker Mark told us how things were hotting up for him.
"I'm up in a crane above all the hot steel where heat rises!" he said. "In 54 degrees Celsius".
You've got nerves of steel Mark!
3. Chippy

Jill in Cumbria works in a chip shop.
"A LOT of people just want chips on a hot day," she said. "It doesn’t help that our uniform is all black. It’s a bit hot."
How does she get through it? "Drinking plenty, working as a team, just getting through it."
On the opposite end of the thermometer, Jill's husband is a butcher, working in a fridge! We hope the temperature in their home is a bit less intense...
4. Sewage plant

James, a sewage worker for Yorkshire Water, got in touch.
"Parts in our valve system expand to a critical point above 30 degrees Celsius which slows the processing speed of the entire plant. So we’ll be keeping the pipes open…" he said.
You'll probably want to keep the windows open too, James!
5. A bakery

"It's like an oven in here" is a phrase you'll probably hear on a hot day.
For Bob in Newcastle, it's true.
"I work in a bakery - and wow, is it hot," he told us. "It hits a 100 degrees plus Fahrenheit (37.8C)."
Crumbs! That's hot.

Warm praise
So in short... if it's a scorcher and you're tucking into some grub at a takeaway, cafe or restaurant - spare a thought for the staff sweating away in the kitchen.
And if you're inside a hot workplace on a sunny day, we salute you!
