We've translated these rap lyrics into Posh English - can you work them out?

By Luke Morgan Britton / Jamie Milton – Published: 27 July 2018, Updated: 29 January 2019

1Xtra's MistaJam has been putting hip-hop's biggest stars to the test with his Lyrical Translation Game, which translates rap lyrics into Proper Standard English, making the likes of Snoop Dogg sound like Shakespeare and Drake a bit more like Sir Francis Drake.

So far, we've seen the likes of Big Narstie, Buddy, Rick Ross and Anderson .Paak all take part, with each trying to work out who would have said things like, "Forthwith, I disapprove of your contemporaries and the faction which you purport to represent" if they got all posh and proper (that one being 2Pac, of course!)

This week, the don of dancehall Sean Paul took part in Lyrical Translation. Head to 1Xtra's Facebook Story to see how he fared.

Take a look at how some of the all-star guests have scored so far, and scroll below to play the game yourself...

Sorry, this quiz is no longer available.

Big Narstie

Big Narstie Plays The Lyrical Translation Game

Can Big Narstie identify classic tracks when we translate their lyrics to formal English?

Big Narstie was the first up, with things starting well for the Base Defender, who correctly sussed out our translated version of Skepta's lyric from That's Not Me solely down to the fact that it "repeats a chop".

However, Narstie's beginner's luck faded a little as it went on, with the grime star-turned-national treasure unable to correctly guess Giggs' Talkin' Da Hardest. "Hey Giggs! They broke down your flow on a poshers!" was his instantly-iconic response to the big reveal.

Narstie did manage to correctly guess When The Baseline Drops and Shape Of You after a couple of clues, and he definitely enjoyed the overall experience - even considering to use some of the silver-tongued examples on a future track. "I'm trying to imagine a beat on what that guy's saying... That'd be sick!"

Buddy

Next up was Compton-born, Pharrell-cosigned newcomer Buddy, who was tested on his knowledge of fellow West Coast rappers. One thing's for sure: Buddy definitely knows his hometown heroes.

Getting full marks and managing to name the likes of Kendrick, Dr Dre and The Game, Buddy even went away with a plan to drop the word "purport" into his own lyrics. "Proper, very proper," as Buddy himself put it.

Rick Ross

Rick Ross - Lyrical Translation!

Rick Ross talks new music, businesses and gets his lyrical knowledge tested!

Rick Ross is known for his impressive lyricism (and great ad-libs) so for his edition of the game, MistaJam translated some of Ross' own lyrics into "the kind of English that the Royals would use".

"I ain't come to play no games" became "I am not in the vicinity for frivolity," which confused and amused Ross in equal amounts, with the rapper saying: "They used some special words on that one".

Still, Ross managed to score a solid three out of five and was another star won over by the quiz. "I need that to sample," Ross told 'Jam. "I'm actually thinking I should have said one or two of them like this."

Anderson .Paak

Anderson .Paak takes on MistaJam's Lyrical Translation Game!

Can Anderson decipher these translated tracks?

Up to now, nobody has loved the game as much as Anderson .Paak. It only took the Dre protege one translation for him to go all in. "Yeah, I love this game. Let's go. I'm ready," he told MistaJam, describing it as "fire".

And you know what, he really was ready. Buddy was the one to match and Paak managed it, also getting five out of five and correctly naming lyrics from Aftermath Records labelmates 50 Cent, Eminem and... himself. Maybe we need to get both rappers in for a head-to-head decider?
