'What a way to open the Proms season' - Katie Derham wasn't wrong, this was a First Night of the Proms to remember, the hall was buzzing and emotions ran high.

It kicked off with Tom Coult's wondrous BBC commission St John's Dance and then things got intense with Igor Levit at the piano for Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3 in C minor, followed by Igor's heart-warming encore of Ode to Joy and climaxing with a vast choir weaving John Adams' spangling and intricate tapestry, Harmonium.

The Beethoven was super-charged

It was clear from the moment Igor Levit, award-winning soloist in tonight's Prom, stepped on stage that he had a strong emotional connection to Beethoven's music. By the end of the piece the force of this relationship was palpable — this is as close to blood, sweat and tears as it gets.
