CDs, DVDs and floppies V1: I wanted to reinstall some software yesterday, but I’ve lost one of the floppy disks. V2: You mean to say you’re still installing software from floppy disk! You should use CD-ROMs. V1: Why? V2: Well they hold much more information, Floppy disks and CD-ROMs are different ways of storing computer data. A floppy disk stores data magnetically; whereas CD-ROMs use optical technology, like music CDs. A floppy cannot store as much data as a hard disk. A hard disk, like a CD-ROM can store much more information than a floppy. A CD-ROM can store much more information than a floppy. One CD-ROM is equivalent to over 500 floppy disks. This is why CD-ROMs are used for storing multimedia information. For example: graphics, sound, videos and interactive elements. However, most computers these days can only read CD-ROMs. It means that you can’t save data on a CD-ROM. So, if you want to save a file you’ve created, you have to use a floppy disk. If you want to put data on a CD-ROM, you need a special piece of hardware. DVD - a Digital Versatile Disk has a huge memory store. It has the capacity of about 30 CD-ROMs. It can store a full-length feature film.
