Nigerian nurses lament over di new NCMN nursing certificate verification wey fit affect dia japa

Di Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) don announce new policy on certificate verification for Nigerian nurses as dem set minimum of two-months post qualification experience requirement bifor foreign nursing board/council go fit verify dia nursing and midwifery certificate.

One memo wey Faruk Umar Abubakar, NMCN registrar issue on Wednesday, tok say nurses go need employers good standing letter bifor dem go fit verify dia certificates.

Di new policy go take effect on 1 March, 2024 and e go affect both local and international trained nurses.

According to di council memo applicants go need to pay non-refundable fee to di board for verification process wey go take minimum of six months.

Di registrar tok say applicants go need active practicing licence within six months expiration date bifor dem go fit apply for verification.

Di council na di only federal goment organisation wey dey regulate di standard of nursing and midwifery practice for Nigeria, so di kontri go fit meet global health standard and di societal needs.

Seven key guidelines for nursing/midwifery certificate verification in Nigeria

Di guidelines and requirements;

  • Applicants go need visit website and login to start verification application.
  • Non-refundable fee for each application for verification to foreign boards of nursing. Dis go cover di cost of courier services to di applicant institution(s) of training, work palce and foreign board
  • Qualified applicants must get minimum of two (2) years post qualification experience from di date, dem collect dia permanent practicing licence.
  • Di Council go request letter of Good Standing from di Chief Executive Officer of applicants work place, nursing training institution and letter of Register CEO, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
  • Applicant go need to dey active practicing licence wit minimum of six months to expiration date
  • Applicant go need upload dia certificate of registration only.
  • Applicant go receive notice from dia email and dashboard on di status of di verification application.

Meanwhile, Ogchuckwu Mgboh, wey dey work as professional nurse for Enugu state tok say, she stand against di two-months post qualification experience requirement for nurses sake of say dis policy no dey realistic due to di high unemployment for di kontri.

She express her concern about di need for employers "good standing letter" for nurses bifor di council do fit verify dia certification.

She explain say some nurses dey face oppression from dia work place and some employers no go gree write di letter becos of shortage of staff.

"You go need to work for two years afta your licence bifor you go need to apply for verification.

"E no dey fair say we go need to wait for minimum six months bifor di council go verify nurses certificates becos fit elapse to one year. Nurses dey write International English Language Testing System (IELTS) wey dey valid for two years,"

Madam Mgboh challenge NMCN make dem fight quackery for nursing profession and focus on remuneration for professional nurses sake of say dia members dey face victimisations from employers.

She tok say make di council focus on di welfare of di members and no be to dey stop dem from travelling abroad.

"Di reason pipo no dey respect our profession na becos of quacks wey don hijack di profession, employers still dey pay di same 30,000 naira salary from 2015." she tok.

"Make council fight for wages, abuse, quackery and no be to dey stop nurses from migration becos nurses dey pay high fees for nursing school."

However, some professional nurses for Nigeria don raise alarm ontop social media as dem wan gada to protest on Monday as dem dey complain ova di increment in price of di certificate verification to 300,000 naira.

Checks from BBC Pidgin on dia website show say di certificate verification cost 13,125 naira but members claim say di new price for verification na 70,000 naira but di council neva update di price for di last ten years.
