As he prepares to play the character of Oloudah Equiano in the play African Snow, actor Israel Oyelumade finds himself thinking about black role models, fatherhood and the state of society. Oloudah Equiano was a key part of the campaign for the abolition of slavery. A former slave who bought his own freedom, he wrote a book about his experiences. It was this book that inspired William Wilberforce to get involved with the abolition movement. The play African snow tells a story of the collision between two very different lives; Oloudah Equiano, a former slave, and John Newton - a preacher, most famous for writing the hymn Amazing Grace, but a former slave trader himself. African snow is a co-production between York Theatre Royal and Riding Lights Theatre Company. The play is at York Theatre Royal from 30th March until 21st April before touring to Mold, Birmingham, London, Hull, Bristol and Brighton. |
