York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the city for over 250 years. The past and present are united, as the historical elegance of the auditorium contrasts with the newly-built, intimate Studio space, allowing a wide variety of programming. Today audiences can choose between drama, dance, opera, pantomime, comedy, debate and youth theatre. | | The Studio: small but perfectly formed |
The theatre is committed to bringing a range of quality productions from around the country to compliment their own presentations of inspiring plays created here in the heart of Yorkshire. York Theatre Royal also recognises the important role the theatre can play within the community and offers a wide range of projects committed to supporting many different groups of people within the education and community settings. The theatre also runs a Youth Theatre which provides a weekly programme for people aged 5 to 25 years, with opportunities to perform both publicly and for invited audiences, whilst also given the opportunity to watch productions, responding through discussion and drama work. In the last couple of years the theatre has hosted many world premieres including the National Theatre’s production of The Permanent Way written by David Hare and the critically acclaimed one man show Gaffer, which premiered in The Studio. This October the theatre will be producing and hosting the World Premiere of Steptoe and Son in Murder at Oil Drum Lane by the series original creator Ray Galton. |
