Before any gay person can come out to family, friends or colleagues they must first come out to themselves. Most gay people remember when they first made sense of their feelings and experiences and thought "maybe I’m gay". Stand Out 01603 624924 Tel: Wed 6-8pm Sat 10am-12pm |
Some describe coming out to themselves as exciting while others find it terrifying. Most people have mixed feelings. There is a gay youth group in Norwich. Stand Out caters for any young person aged 26 or under who is lesbian, gay or is questioning their sexuality. The group provides a drop-in twice a week (Wednesday evening and Saturday morning) which is a safe place to explore feelings either in a one to one setting or as part of a group discussion. Many young people may not know anyone else who is gay. They may have heard their families or friends make homophobic comments or they may have made comments like these themselves. They may have seen unfavorable representations of gay people on the television or they may just be unable to relate to the very narrow, stereotypical images of lesbian and gay people in the media. One young man says "I knew I fancied men but I was into sports and I was one of the lads so I never thought I could be gay." more >>> |
