Radio Presenter

Mark Powlett

Mark Powlett

Mark Powlett was selected to be the new BBC Radio Coventry and Warwickshire early breakfast show presenter when he won New Talent's presenter scheme in 2005. He started his own show in January 2006 and now shares some of what he's learnt so far.

In our success section Mark talks about winning the scheme.

Q1. Is there anything you wish you'd known before starting as a radio presenter?

I was lucky as I had loads of mentoring and training - so I think I was told everything I needed to know! Because I came from acting and stand-up comedy I was used to talking in front of people!

Q2. What advice would you give to a new presenter?
My top tips for being a successful presenter are: don't worry if things go wrong - it's only radio, have fun and be yourself!

Q3. What's the best way to get into radio?

Find a station and get some work experience, even if you have to do it unpaid. Get to know people and then work your way up...

Q4. What radio presenters do you listen to?

I listen to lots of people... although now I'm a presenter myself, I tend to listen to just my own station! I think you have to find your own style...
