He replaces his father, Ali Khamenei, who led the Middle Eastern country for 35 years.
Ali Khamenei was killed during military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States earlier this month.

Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is 56 years old and is the son of the previous leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Mojtaba Khamenei hasn't held an official job in government before and hasn't given public speeches or interviews.
As a younger man he served in Iran's military, then later studied Islamic theology.
Journalists at BBC Persian say that he was an influential person behind the scenes when his father was the Supreme Leader.
