If you've ever dreamed of having your very own private island - then this story is for you.

Sweden is giving five lucky people the chance of taking charge of their own little piece of the country, for a whole year.

Each winner will receive a certificate, as well as a formal contract outlining their rights and responsibilities.

Officials say that you can explore and even invite guests to your island, as long as you show consideration for the local wildlife and environment.

What would you do if you owned your own island? Let us know in the comments.

The European country of Sweden is famous for its thousands of beautiful islands, especially around its coastline and many lakes.

In fact, the Nordic nation has the highest number of islands of any country in the world - with 267,570.

That's why the country's official tourist board, Visit Sweden, has decided to give five lucky people the chance to own one of those many islands, for a full twelve month period.

The five small islands up for grabs are called Tjuvholmen, Medbådan, Skötbådan, Storberget and Marsten - and are all located in the south and east of the country.

Applicants will be asked to explain why they deserve to be in charge of their very own island and a team of judges will decide their five favourite entries.

Officials say they want to inspire curiosity and share a very Swedish outlook on life and responsibility in nature.

However, even if you don't end up winning, you can still visit any of the five islands.

Sweden's Right of Public Access law gives everyone the freedom to roam - as long as the local wildlife and environment is respected.
