There are big protests happening in the city of Minneapolis in America about a government crackdown on immigration.

In December last year the government sent teams of immigration officers to the city with the aim of finding, arresting and removing people who have come to America illegally or have stayed longer than they were allowed.

Tackling immigration was one of President Trump's big promises when he won the US election in 2024 and was a very popular policy among those who supported him.

However there has also been some anger about how hard the agents have been cracking down, who they have been targeting, and how they are dealing with protesters.

What is ICE?

The agents who have been sent to Minneapolis, and other US cities, are part of a team known as ICE - which stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The agency enforces immigration laws and investigates people who it suspects are are in the US illegally.

ICE agents have the power to stop, hold and arrest people they suspect of being in the US illegally.

Groups of people in Minneapolis have protested as ICE have carried out operations.

Some people film ICE agents as they carry out arrests and sound alarms to let people know when the agents are in the neighbourhood.

There have also been protests in cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Austin.

Some encounters between ICE agents and protestors have been violent and, in Minneapolis, two anti-ICE protesters have been killed.

That has led to more protests about what ICE are doing and how they are doing it.

There have also been arguments between the national - or Federal - government of President Trump and local authorities of the city of Minneapolis, and the state it's in - Minnesota - about what is happening there.

The state's Governor Tim Walz has urged the president to remove the ICE agents immediately.

US President Donald Trump says his administration is "reviewing everything".

Some members of Donald Trump's government have been very critical of the protests and of the protestors, including those who have been killed, saying they are stopping officers doing their legal work.

But his opponents say that how ICE are going about their work is over the top and unfair, something that is now also being said by some members of Donald Trump's own party.

Several political surveys suggest about half of voters in the US support the efforts to deport those living in the US illegally, but others suggest that voters are split on how that crackdown is being carried out.
