An investigation is to be carried into the cause of the fire at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Westcliff-on-Sea
A fire has broken out at a church in Essex, causing homes to be evacuated.
Twelve people were moved from their homes while fire crews tackled the blaze at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Northview Drive, Westcliff-on-Sea.
An Essex Fire Service spokesman said five people were treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.
A quarter of the building was damaged after the fire was reported at 04:14 GMT. The fire was out by 05:38.
An investigation is to be carried out to determine the cause.
