A lighthouse near Bristol saved by a community group after it was set to be demolished is to be officially handed over to its new owners.

Operator Trinity House was to close Portishead's Blacknore Point lighthouse because it was rendered obsolete by modern satellite navigation systems.

But local residents formed the Blacknore Lighthouse Trust and raised enough money to take over its running.

It was built in 1894 and is the only one of its kind left in the country.

The official handover will take place at a reception at the former National Nautical School at Fedden Village.

Bill Shire, of the Blacknore Lighthouse Trust, said: "This is our heritage and we didn't want to lose her. We now have an organisation in place to maintain it."
