Region Profile
The South Wales Central region is made up of eight constituencies.
The region elects 12 members, eight directly elected constituency members and four additional members. It's a predominantly urban region which includes Wales' capital and largest city, Cardiff - which has a population of more than 340,000. The region also includes the seaside town of Barry, the former mining town of Pontypridd and parts of the formerly industrial and still heavily populated South Wales Valleys. There are rural areas in the western part of the Vale of Glamorgan. The constituencies which make up the South Wales Central region are: Cardiff Central, Cardiff North, Cardiff South and Penarth, Cardiff West, Cynon Valley, Pontypridd, Rhondda and the Vale of Glamorgan. At the 2011 election, the Conservatives had 2 South Wales Central regional AMs and Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats had one each.
