    Eastbourne tourism firms are planning a mass appeal over business rates rises that have seen some bills soar.

    The government published new rateable values last year, with London and the South East expected to see higher rates because of soaring property values.

    Guesthouse owner Karen Cheater, whose bill will rise tenfold, said Eastbourne Hospitality Association (EHA) planned to appeal on behalf of the town.

    The government said valuations could be challenged and many rates would fall.

    Money seized from criminals is to be used to provide CCTV to protect a pre-school.

    £500 is being donated from the Police Property Act Fund to Forest Row Community pre-school.

    The man who died when he was hit by a car on the A27 yesterday morning was walking to work at Lancing College, where he was a porter.

    The family of 59-year-old father and grandfather Trevor Campbell from Sompting have released a tribute to him, calling him a wonderful man.

    A motorist, arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, has been released without charge.

    Wayne Leyh and Matthew Sullivan are wanted on recall to prison for breaching the terms of their licence.

    Leyh, 35, was sentenced to five months for theft in October 2016 and released from prison in December. He is white, 5' 5", slim and has short brown hair. 

    Sullivan, 34, who has links to Seaford and Brighton is white, 5' 10", slim and has short brown hair. He was jailed for five years and eight months for possession of drugs with intent to supply in June 2012 and released in November 2016.

    Police are searching for a man who is believed to have spat at two people from a taxi.

    Two men were walking at Seven Dials at around 19:00 GMT on Friday January 20 when a man in a taxi shouted "hey lads" out of the window. 

    He then leant out and spat directly at them. The suspect laughed as the taxi continued driving. He is described as in his 30s, balding or had a shaved head, light facial hair.

    "Officers from the MPS Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) yesterday attended Gatwick Airport and stopped a 44-year-old man from Hertfordshire under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act after he disembarked from a flight from Iraq.

    "As a result of enquiries during the stop a decision was made to arrest the man under section 5 of the Terrorism Act - suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts.

    "The man was arrested under PACE and taken to a central London police station where he remains in custody."

    Police are concerned about a missing 13-year-old from Eastbourne.

    Terry Bailey, known as Cash, was last seen when he was dropped off by a taxi in Sorrel Drive at 16:00 GMT on Thursday February 9 but he didn't come home.

  20. Raymond Briggs: Lifetime award for The Snowman creatorpublished at 12:32 GMT 10 February 2017

    Sussex author and illustrator Raymond Briggs, the creator of The Snowman, has been recognised with a lifetime achievement award by the charity BookTrust.

    A panel of six judges said the award recognised his "outstanding contribution" to children's literature.

    BookTrust paid tribute to the impact his "captivating and inspiring work" has had on children and adults alike.

    Briggs, who also created When The Wind Blows and Fungus the Bogeyman, said it was "an incredible honour".

    "It's lovely to be given an award for all my life achievements," he said.
