    The Toys R Us store at St George's Retail Park in Leicester has been named as one of those that will close after Christmas by the city council.

    A man has admitted murdering Leslie Salmon in an attack at a hostel in Derby.

    Martin McDermott fatally injured Mr Salmon in August while the pair had both been living at Burdett Lodge on Bass Road.

    The 60-year-old made his plea via video link at Nottingham Crown Court earlier.

    He's due to be sentenced on Monday 12 February.

    A collection of 60 vintage Russian watches have been stolen during a burglary in Newark.

    Nottinghamshire Police, external said the offender also took a Tag watch, a laptop and a Samsung Galaxy mobile from the property in Edwards Avenue.

    The Crown Prosecution Service has commented on the sentencing of Charlie Dunn's mother and stepfather.

    The five-year-old boy drowned at Bosworth water park in July last year.

    Paul Smith has today been jailed for seven-and-a-half years for manslaughter by gross negligence, threatening a witness and a driving offence.

    Charlie drowned and died as a result of grossly negligent parenting by someone who was supposed to make sure he was safe. Paul Smith accepts he had been responsible for Charlie’s welfare at the water park that afternoon and that Charlie’s death was a result of his failure to care for him. The CPS presented evidence, including eye witness accounts, of how he had failed to supervise Charlie for long periods over the course of the afternoon, leaving him to play on his own near the water, even though he could not swim."

    A police officer has been injured while responding to a public order incident on Leicester's Market Place this afternoon.

    The BBC has been told the officer sustained "minor injuries" and a teenage girl was arrested on suspicion of assault.

    It attracted several police vehicles and large crowds around the clock tower area just before 16:00.

    A man from Nottingham who pinned two kittens to the floor and beat them to death has been jailed.

    The four-month-old kittens called Panther and Baby suffered serious injuries including skull fractures and broken ribs.

    Aaron Jay Barker, 26, of Redhill Road, Arnold, took the kittens to an emergency vet on 20 January but they both already dead.

    The RSPCA said the severity of the injuries led the vet to believe they were caused by blunt force trauma.

    Barker was found guilty of two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

    After a two-day trial at Nottingham Magistrates' Court, he was jailed for 20 week yesterday.

    Sandals believed to have belonged to Lawrence of Arabia have fetched £2,600 at auction.

    The slightly battered sandals were unearthed in a carrier bag and handed to Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derbyshire.

    Thomas Edward Lawrence served as a British officer in the Middle East during World War One and helped Arab tribes revolt against the Turks.

    The sandals, part of a collection which included one of Lawrence's books, were left to a family friend.

    About 140 Nottingham City Transport workers are giving their Christmas bonuses to a charity which supports the homeless.

    The company has now matched the amount, bringing the total to £4,000 for Framework.

    Graham Chapman, deputy leader of Nottingham City Council, praised the transport company.

    Derby Cathedral's plan to open a school in the city has moved a step closer.

    A company that buys and develops sites for free schools across the country has confirmed a deal's been done to buy the derelict Friar Gate Goods Yard.

    The new secondary school will be built on part of the land. More details of what will happen on the rest of the site are due to be released in the new year.
