    I've been speaking to Chris Read, Labour leader of Rotherham Council about three big issues for the borough.

    These are the Sheffield City Region, HS2 and a possible transfer of powers to the council from commissioners.

    Firstly, what's his view on the hold up of a devolution deal for South Yorkshire:

    On the HS2 Mr Read feels the M18 route is a mistake:

    In the House of Commons later there is a chance that some powers could be returned to the council from commissioners following the child sexual exploitation scandal of 2015.

    They did take back the running of some services but he's confident of more returning:

  8. Wanted Romanian man arrested in Batleypublished at 17:35 BST 18 July 2017

    A man who was wanted by police after being convicted of sex offences in Romania has been arrested in Batley.

    Florin Sztoica was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant and was arrested last night.

    The 18-year-old was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court in London today.

    He was sentenced to two years six months in prison in his home country.

    West Yorkshire Police put out an appeal to try and catch him last Friday.

    For generations Dippy the Dinosaur has been welcoming guests to The Natural History Museum in London.

    However, two years ago the venue decided to replace Dippy with a new skelton of a blue whale called Hope.

    The project was filmed by the BBC's Horizon programme - and you can see the trailer below:

    The man responsible for ensuring Hope was hung safely is James Arrowsmith from Doncaster who told me how he became part of the project:

  14. Fire authority rejects proposal to be governed by police commissionerpublished at 16:28 BST 18 July 2017

    The North Yorkshire Fire Authority has rejected a proposal to change the way police and fire services are governed.

    Fire cops

    The county's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Julia Mulligan, launched a consultation on the idea yesterday.

    The move comes after Parliament made it possible for PCCs to apply to oversee the fire and rescue service as well as the police.

    The fire authority says it believes it would be better if the PCC were to become a voting member on the authority, alongside existing councillors.

    People in parts of South Yorkshire have reported seeing a huge smoke cloud on the horizon this afternoon:

    Worksop fire

    It's actually a fire which is at a Worksop plastics factory, this picture was taken from Catcliffe this afternoon.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have confirmed that they have sent fire engines to help assist their colleagues in Nottinghamshire, who have asked the public to keep their windows and doors shut.

  17. Temporary traveller sites to be spread across Leedspublished at 15:16 BST 18 July 2017

    In the last half hour, Leeds councillors have backed a plan to introduce nine temporary Gypsy and traveller pitches.

    Travellers

    The sites will be spread across the city and are designed to ease problems caused by unauthorised or roadside camps.

    Travellers were moved on from an unauthorised site in Meanwood earlier today. A site has also sprung up on land off Kirkstall Road.

    This afternoon's meeting heard local taxpayers paid a bill of more than £800,000 for dealing with unauthorised sites between 2012 and 2017.

  19. 'We've got to get it right': York Labour MP on HS2published at 14:33 BST 18 July 2017

    The government is insisting the HS2 rail line - which will eventually run from London to Yorkshire - will bring enormous economic benefits to the whole of the North of England.

    The route will cost more than £50bn to build.

    It will go from London to Leeds and then branch off to join the existing rail network near Church Fenton - between Tadcaster and Selby.

    Rachael Maskell is the Labour MP for York Central and shadow rail minister. She says with such a big investment involved the project has to be undertaken properly:
