A free school in Leeds will be closed for a second day tomorrow because of an outbreak of sickness.

Staff at Lighthouse School in Cookridge say a deep clean is taking place and there'll be a full health and safety review.

The school says parents will be kept informed about the likely re-opening date.

A 10-year-old boy had to be airlifted to hospital after a collision in the Great Houghton area of Barnsley.

The boy was involved in a collision with a lorry while riding his bike along Rotherham Road near the junction with John Street (pictured) at about 08:25 this morning.

He's currently in hospital with suspected serious injuries.

Anyone with information on the collision is asked to contact police.

More than 30 Roman skeletons have been unearthed on the site of a new housing estate in West Yorkshire.

The skeletons were found alongside pottery, jewellery and building remains during an archaeological dig at the site in Pontefract.

Most of the graves have now been excavated and the remains will be tested in a laboratory.

David Hunter, from West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service, said they were from about 200-300 AD.

"We are pretty confident they are from the Roman era in Yorkshire, so about 1,700 years ago," he said.

An education trust which runs schools across the north of England is failing to improve standards, the education watchdog has said.

The Northern Education Trust took on "too many poorly performing schools" and had "unrealistic and unachievable" plans for improvement, Ofsted found.

The trust runs academies in Yorkshire, Tyneside, Wearside, Teesside, Northumberland and Greater Manchester.

The report does not reflect changes made since the inspections, it said.

The authority can now make decisions on adult social care, economic growth, and the maintenance of local parks as well as town centre management.

The deadline for handing back all services to the council is March 2019.

Children's social care and community safety will remain in the hands of government-appointed commissioners.

A Labour MP was moved to tears as she paid tribute to murdered Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox (pictured) and urged MPs to unite and end discrimination.

A visibly emotional Dawn Butler said MPs "must unite together in one voice and build bridges, not walls" as she paid tribute to Mrs Cox who was killed in her constituency last June.

Ms Butler was leading a Westminster Hall debate calling on the government to mark UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The sons of a woman from Leeds who's been jailed in Rwanda have written to the Prime Minister to ask for help securing her release.

Violette Uwamahoro, who's five months pregnant, was arrested after returning to the East African state for a funeral.

She's been charged with sharing state secrets and her husband, Faustin, says he thinks it's all because of his political views:

The Foreign Office is now helping her family.

Staff at a Topshop distribution centre in Leeds are to hold a fresh strike in a row over pay and working conditions.

Members of the GMB union at the site will walk out for 24 hours from 06:00 on Wednesday morning following the breakdown of talks.

The workers went on strike last month, saying the action disrupted deliveries to stores in Sir Philip Green's company.

Three men have been charged with the murder of a 47-year-old man in Rotherham just before Christmas last year.

The body of Steven Fretwell was discovered at an address on Kingswood Avenue in Dinnington on Sunday 18 December 2016.

A post-mortem examination concluded Mr Fretwell died as a result of multiple injuries.

The three men, aged 21, 28 and 35, have been remanded into custody and are due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Gary Ballance says signing a new contract with Yorkshire which will keep him at Headingley until the end of the 2019 season has come "at the perfect time".

The 27-year-old England batsman was named Yorkshire captain in December.

He will captain Yorkshire in all three formats in 2017 having replaced Andrew Gale, who retired to become Yorkshire head coach in November.

Ballance says: "I can now purely focus on the captaincy, batting and scoring runs."

The collision in Hillsborough which was disrupting public transport has now been cleared.

Services are beginning to get back to normal.

Workers at Arriva Trains North are to strike on 8 April in disputes over staffing and the role of conductors, the RMT railworkers union has announced.

They'll join workers on Southern and Merseyrail services who are all involved in a row with rail operators over plans to remove the responsibility of opening and closing train doors from guards.

A man has been seriously injured in a collision in York at lunchtime.

Police are now searching for a black Nissan after the collision at the junction of Blossom Street and Nunnery Lane at about midday.

The man has been taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
