    The University of Sheffield Students' Union has been rated the best in the UK.

    It's the ninth year the organisation has topped the "Good Students' Union" category of the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, external .

    It achieved a 98% approval rating from students.

  2. £100k bill for new South Yorkshire devolution consultationpublished at 10:10 GMT 23 March 2017

    Taxpayers face a £100,000 bill for a new consultation about devolution in South Yorkshire.

    It comes after a previous survey was ruled unlawful following a legal challenge by Derbyshire County Council regarding how the consultation was carried out in Chesterfield.

    The ruling last year meant that plans for a directly elected mayor for the Sheffield City Region have been delayed until 2018.

    However, Doncaster and Barnsley Councils are exploring an alternative proposals for a Yorkshire-wide mayor.

    A flood defence scheme along the River Don in Sheffield is set to be completed this year.

    The Lower Don Valley scheme is the first of six projects being worked on since 2014.

    It is hoped that they will reduce the chances of a repeat of the damage caused by the 2007 floods.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a collision in Maltby on Monday.

    At 16:50 a red Chevrolet and a black Peugeot crashed on the A631 Tickhill Road near the colliery.

    The Chevrolet ended up in a ditch, leaving the driver with minor injuries, while the black Peugeot drove off.

    Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101.

    A Sheffield schoolboy who spotted an error in data from Nasa could now help to fix the problem.

    A-level student Miles Soloman discovered that some energy readings from the International Space Station were negative, something which is impossible.

    Miles and his teacher James O'Neill reported the error to the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS) who alerted the US space department.

    The 17-year-old could now help scientists at Nasa fix the problem.

    A new play about the 1984/85 miner' strike opens at Barnsley's Electric Theatre tonight.

    "Two Tribes" has been researched and produced by students at University Campus Barnsley, some of whom didn't have any knowledge of the strike before they started the project.

    Firefighters have been dealing with a house fire in the Highfield area of Sheffield this morning.

    We are told the occupants of the house are safe.

    A police officer has been stabbed in the grounds of Parliament prompting a lockdown.

    The MP for Thirsk and Malton - Kevin Hollinrake - spoke to BBC Radio York shortly after shots were heard:

    There was definitely a clear noise, like a gunshot, but it was clear that it was something like that noise. Then people in the streets suddenly moved in a direction away from the gun shots. There was more panic, certainly, outside than inside."

  19. Parliament incident: Sheffield students in London 'safe and well' published at 16:39 GMT 22 March 2017

    Journalism students from the University of Sheffield are among those who have been in London during in this afternoon's major security incident at Westminster .

    They had been visiting the Houses of Parliament and are seen here at a talk by Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield.

    They have confirmed they are safe and well .

  20. Parliament incident: MP saw 'crowd of people running towards her' published at 16:20 GMT 22 March 2017

    The Labour MP for Wakefield Mary Creagh was on her way to vote in the Commons when she saw a crowd of people running towards her.

    She decided to take refuge in Westminster tube station and alerted staff there to what had happened:

    "I then realised that we had tonnes of tourists pouring out of the tube so I went straight to the control room at the tube, I told the person in charge there there'd been - that we thought there was a rampaging terror incident happening on the Palace estate."
