    Police in Maryport are trying to trace Mary Hart, 76, who has not been seen since 08:00 on Friday, 20 March, when she was seen with workers packing up belongings from her home address in Workington.

  2. Cyclist dies after crash on mountain roadpublished at 14:09 GMT 23 March 2020

    A cyclist has died after losing control of his bike on a mountain pass in the Lake District.

    The man, who was 27, was cycling down Honister Pass with a friend on Saturday, when he fell, suffering severe injuries.

    Two passing off-duty doctors, police, Keswick mountain rescue volunteers and air and land ambulance paramedics made what the rescue team described as "sustained efforts" to resuscitate the cyclist.

  3. Historic Grasmere shop among businesses closing doorspublished at 13:37 GMT 23 March 2020

    Dozens of businesses across Cumbria have been announcing that they are closing premises temporarily because of the pandemic, among them the famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop, which says it is the first time such an event has happened in 166 years.

    The shop in which the biscuit-like delicacy is baked, to a recipe developed by Sarah Nelson in 1854, is far too small inside to allow a 2m space between customers or staff.

    Like many other businesses, though, the internet is providing a cushion, in a way that Sarah, who sold her product from a tree stump outside the shop, could never have dreamed of.

    The inquest into the death of Phil Longcake, who was found dead at the top of Dixon's Chimney in Carlisle in October last year, has been told how his mental health went downhill in the months before his death.

    Mr Longcake was described in statements as a previously happy man, “a laugh and very professional”, but his mental health declined after he told his family about suffering historical abuse.

    The inquest heard how he’d twice tried to take his own life last year.

    He was found by police in he early hours of Monday 28 October trapped in a ladder at the top of Dixon’s chimney and despite attempts to rescue him, he died later that day.

    The inquest continues.

  6. Travel: Buses replace trains at Parton, and services cutpublished at 12:12 GMT 23 March 2020

    The landslide at Parton on the Cumbrian Coast railway line is still resulting in buses replacing trains between Whitehaven and Workington.

    More widely, services are now being reduced by all train operators because of coronavirus, and passengers are advised to check what services are running before leaving home.

  7. Carlisle tyre factory halts productionpublished at 11:52 GMT 23 March 2020

    The tyre factory Pirelli says it is halting production at its factory in Carlisle from today, because of coronavirus.

    The company, which employs around 1,000 people in the city, says it's taken the decision to protect its workers, although there's also been a fall in demand for its products.

    It says some staff will keep working on its site, orders will be fulfilled from stock where available, and it'll restart tyre production as soon as possible.

  8. Firefighters angered as as fire is blamed on arsonpublished at 11:11 GMT 23 March 2020

    Firefighters spent yesterday afternoon putting out a large wildfire in West Cumbria.

    The blaze was started deliberately at Kells in Whitehaven, according to the county's fire service, and crews from Whitehaven, Frizington, Egremont and Keswick were called.

  9. Head teacher dies after showing virus symptomspublished at 10:19 GMT 23 March 2020

    Tributes have been paid to a Cumbrian head teacher who has died after being admitted to hospital with coronavirus symptoms.

    Wendy Jacobs, head of Roose Community Primary School in Barrow, died at Furness General Hospital on Sunday.

    In a statement to parents, chair of governors Fred Chatfield, said colleagues were "in shock".

    He said the school would remain closed to all pupils, including those of essential workers.

    While it has not yet been confirmed how she died, Mr Chatfield said: "This is devastating news for our school and nursery community and all our thoughts are with her family.

    "We are all in shock and given these exceptional circumstances we have taken the decision to close the school and nursery fully to all pupils, including those of essential workers.

    "I am sure you will understand that opening the school and nursery is not an option.

    "This is a huge loss to our school, nursery and community."

    The school caters for about 200 pupils aged between four and 11.

    So far there have been 79 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Cumbria, resulting in three deaths.

  10. Inquest resumed into man's death on Dixon's Chimneypublished at 10:07 GMT 23 March 2020

    The inquest into the death of the man who became trapped at the top of Dixon's Chimney in Carlisle last October will resume today.

    A huge rescue operation was mounted after Phil Longcake , 53, from Dalston near the city, was seen at the top of the 290ft (88m) chimney in sub-zero temperatures, but in the end firefighters using a huge crane recovered his body.

    When the inquest was opened last November, the coroner was told he died of hypothermia and cerebral swelling.

    • Temperatures at 3000ft (900m): -2C (28F) at first, rising to 5C (41F) in the afternoon
    • Winds: A moderate south-easterly breeze throughout the day at 15mph to 25mph, gusts up to 35mph for exposed ridges and summits, with a rather significant wind chill
    • Cloud: Unbroken sunshine is expected, with just some high cloud, turning the sunshine hazy at times, so cloud bases well above the peaks
    • Weather: After another cold start with frost, it will be dry and fine throughout the day with plenty of sunshine and just some areas of high cloud
    • Freezing level: Above the summits
    • Visibility: Very good or excellent.

    Having said all that, The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association has asked people not to go on the fells.

    The chairman of the association, which represents all the teams in the county, said the teams wanted to support its NHS colleagues, and team members who worked in the health service.

    Michael and Debra Tweedy who were married last Friday were gutted when their honeymoon to Gran Canaria was cancelled as Spain went into lockdown over coronavirus.

    But there was a happy ending, when Debra from Tyneside who works for beverage company Ringtons, was contacted by the Inn Collection Group.

    The Inn Collection Group is one of Ringtons customers and when its managing director heard of the coulple's plight he stepped in to help.

    The newly-weds were offered a complimentary honeymoon at the groups Ambleside Inn in the Lake District.
