Four fire crews were called at lunchtime today when a blaze broke out in the bedroom off a house in Town View in Kendal.

Windermere Road, one of the main streets into the town, was closed for a while as they spent an hour dealing with the fire.

It's not thought anyone was injured.

The company that runs Sellafield is offering large quantities of personal protection equipment through the Cumbria resilience forum, to organisations dealing with the Covid 19 pandemic.

The equipment includes 2,500 disposable respirator masks, gowns, suits, gloves and lab coats.

The company said the equipment came from their own staff, suppliers and contractors and some was available because work on the site had been suspended during the pandemic.

Mark Neate, safety director at Sellafield said they were working with those involved to make sure the equipment went to where there was greatest need.

In a tweet, the force said the Lake District is closed and urged people of thinking of visiting the area to stay away.

Cumbria Police have warned they do not want a repeat of last weekend when thousands of tourists descended on the Lake District.

In light of government guidance Cumbria Police say daily exercise should stay local, and anyone travelling to the Lakes can expect to be stopped and asked if their travel is essential

Family doctor practice across a wide area of north Cumbria say they have reorganised the way they operate to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

They say anyone suspecting they have been infected with the virus should ring 111, and if they need to see a doctor, they will be contacted by a GP and then invited to a central hub, which will deal with nothing else.

Patients wanting to contact the doctor for any other reason should telephone their own GP, and they will be invited to an appointment which may not be at the usual health centre.

A spokeswoman for the clinical commissioning group stressed that it was not now possible to visit a practice without an appointment, but that all initial appointments should be made by telephone or online.

The junior world cup for mountain running due to be staged in Ambleside this summer has been postponed till the autumn.

The International Under 18 Mountain Running Cup will now be held on 17 October.

The competition for the world's top young runners is being staged in England for the first time, and is a remarkable coup for the host club Ambleside AC.

There will be a parade with national flags through the streets to an opening ceremony on the evening of October 16, which will also see an uphill time trial race to the summit of Wansfell.

The chair of the organising committee, Duncan Richards, said: "We are determined to have a celebration of international junior mountain running for us all to look forward to.”

Police in south Cumbria say they're seeing an increase in people being outside in groups and failing to abide by the government's latest guidance on restricted movements and social distancing.

If you are in one of the vulnerable or at risk categories or you are self-isolating due to symptoms in your household then there are various ways you can get the things you need without leaving the house.

The Business Support Grants being made available by the government will start to pay out soon.

These are the Small Business Grant and the grant for businesses in the retail, hospitality or leisure sectors and the forms to apply for these should already be on your district council's website.

Coronavirus misinformation is flooding the internet and experts are calling on the public to practice "information hygiene".

Cumbrian district and borough councils are now setting up systems to help businesses apply for grants under a government scheme.

South Lakeland council said it expected money to arrive today to pay for grants of up to £25,000, and it would be processing applications from Monday.

The authority now has a website online , externalwhere firms can apply for grants.

Firefighters called to a blaze in a house in Springfield Road, Carlisle, this morning found a toaster had gone up in flames.

Crews from both Carlisle fire stations were called, but it is thought no one was hurt, and one firefighter said neighbours turned out and gave them a round of applause.

South Lakeland council, for example, already has a website up , externalwhere you can apply for grants.

Cumbria Tourism has been contacted by the NHS which is seeking accommodation for key workers.

Police say the A596 will be closed near Crosby for some time after a crash earlier.

Drivers should seek alternative routes while they complete investigations and get the road clear.

No other details of the crash have been made public so far.

Cumbria Police say they do not want a repeat of last weekend when thousands of tourists descended on the Lake District.

Temporary Ch Supt Rob O'Connor said: "It is really clear that people should not be travelling unless there is an essential reason to do so.

"It does not mean on nice days you can drive into the Lakes and go walking, or ride your motorbike to Devil's Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale."

But he said he hoped new powers allowing police to impose on-the-spot fines would not be used

Work to extend the main submarine building facilities in Barrow's BAE shipyard has been temporarily halted while new ways of working are sorted out.

Various buildings are being added to allow to the yard to build the new Dreadnought class vessels, and complete the existing class of Astute submarines.

BAE and its contractors, Morgan Sindall say they have suspended work and sent most employees home.

However, the government says critical defence work should continue and the yard hopes to have up to one fifth of its workforce back in on Monday.

Bassenthwaite Rotary Club is looking for someone who is making a necessary journey from Cockermouth to the Dalston area over the next few days.

We must tell you that travelling any distance to go for your daily exercise could be an offence under the current emergency legislation, and the Lake District rescue teams have also asked people not to go into the high fells.

Cumbria's director of public health says he is frustrated because he cannot give coronavirus figures for the whole county.

Speaking on BBC Radio Cumbia the director, Colin Cox, said deaths were reported to a national office, which did not then pass the figures back to local authorities.

The Morecambe Bay hospitals trust says a further six patients being treated for coronavirus at its two main hospitals have died.

Three men aged 94, 84 and 56, and a woman aged 82 died at the Furness General Hospital, and a man aged 90 and a woman aged 85 died at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The trust said they all died over the past few days, but gave no further details.

It brings the total number of deaths in South Cumbria and North Lancashire to nine.

A Cumbrian business is one of a number of manufacturers across the country that have come forward to help make extra medical machinery for the NHS.

Forth Engineering, which is based in Barrow, Cleator Moor and Maryport, is helping to make ventilators and disinfecting robots, such as the ones used in China.

The robots will be used to help hospitals and could be used to keep supermarkets and schools clean.

Managing director Mark Telford told BBC Radio Cumbria the ventilators should be ready within days.
