The councillor in charge of public services in Coventry, Rachel Lancaster, says she disputes the Unite union's version of events over a suspended colleague.
About 40 staff from Coventry's Whitley Depot are taking strike action after, they say, a union convenor was suspended for organising a protest at the council house yesterday.
The council confirms a member of staff is "subject to a disciplinary investigation" but as the process is underway "cannot comment any further".

The family of 20-year-old Bethany Hill, who was found dead in Statford-upon-Avon last week, say they've been left "absolutely devastated" by the loss of the "loving daughter, sister and auntie".
They say she was a "source of great joy and laughter" and her laugh "is something we will never forget".

About 40 staff from Coventry's Whitley Depot are protesting after a Unite union convenor, who organised a smaller protest on Monday, was suspended.
Mick Shortland (pictured), corporate representative for the union at the city council, said feeling was "strong" and added "we will not tolerate this kind of attitude towards our convenor".
"We're asking them to lift the suspension, get around a table and get members back to work."
Leicester City footballer Marc Albrighton has started this year's Atherstone Ball Game by launching the ball into the crowd in the town's main street.
Whoever's in possession of it when the final klaxon sounds at 17:00 is declared the winner.

A cyclist is in hospital in Coventry with a serious head injury, external after being hit by a car.
The ambulance service says it found the man, believed to be in his 20s, lying in the road at around 17:50 yesterday at the junction of the A444 and Stoney Stanton Road.
They say the man wasn't wearing a safety helmet but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.
Work on the new supermarket, in Shultern Lane, Cannon Park, appears to be progressing rapidly after the Sutton Park Renault dealership building was demolished, external last week.

Emergency crews spent just over an hour dealing with a fire in a derelict pub in north Warwickshire last night.
Around 10 firefighters were called to the Black Swan Inn on Watling Street at Grendon just after 23:00.
The fire was found on the first floor of the disused building.
A Warwick campaigner has joined the running to take the role of Warwickshire’s police commissioner this May, external - as the youngest candidate so far.

Participants in Atherstone's ball game will be reminded they're being filmed on CCTV when the annual event gets underway today.
The police expressed concern about the level of violence at the event last year.
Hundreds take part in the free-for-all in Long Street every Shrove Tuesday.
The Atherstone ball game is one of three annual Shrovetide football matches that have been played for hundreds of years.
