Summary

  1. What Trump has said about Iran todaypublished at 23:15 GMT

From interviewing with several news outlets to speaking at a Republican conference to delivering a formal press briefing, President Trump has had a busy day discussing the war with Iran.

Here's a timeline of Trump's remarks throughout today:

    • He told CBS News "I think the war is very complete, pretty much", and said the US was "very far ahead of schedule"
    • Speaking to NBC, he left open the prospect of acquiring Iranian oil, saying "certainly people have talked about it"
    • In an interview with the New York Post, he said the administration was "nowhere near" making a decision on whether to order US troops into Iran
    • Speaking to Republican lawmakers, Trump said the US was drawn into a "short-term" military operation in Iran to "get rid of some very evil people"
    • He went on to say: "We've already won in many ways, but we haven't won enough"
    • Trump told the New York Post he is "not happy" with Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, but at his press briefing later did not make clear who he wants to take his place - or how that will be achieved
    • At his press briefing, Trump reiterated that the operation in Iran has been a "tremendous success", but also added that he wants to ensure Iran cannot develop nuclear weaponry "for a very long time" - a much bigger task
    • The US still has targets in Iran, Trump tells reporters, but they could be taken out "in one day"
    • Still, he says the war will be over "very soon"
  2. Is Venezuela Trump's template for Iran's future?published at 23:00 GMT

Trump just made an unscheduled stop at El Arepazo, a Venezuelan restaurant and community hub in Doral.

In January, I was at this exact same restaurant along with hundreds of Venezuelan expatriates who were celebrating the fall of Nicolas Maduro.

Trump was inside for less than 5 minutes, greeting enthusiastic supporters - one of whom yelled that Trump is the best president of his lifetime - and buying arepas, which he said he would eat on Air Force One.

He didn't mention Iran - but his earlier comments suggested that he sees the fall of Maduro as a model that he hopes can be replicated in Iran, and, he hopes, earn the goodwill of Iranian exiles in cities such as Los Angeles that have been hoping for the fall of the ayatollahs.

It's unclear if Trump will speak again tonight, but he did briefly say "I'll see you on the plane" as he walked past reporters.

  3. Analysis

Trump's latest comments cast into doubt his claims about war ending soonpublished at 22:51 GMT

    Anthony Zurcher
    North America correspondent

If coming into this press conference Donald Trump was giving hints that he was preparing to wrap up military operations against Iran – an “excursion”, as he called it – his latest comments have cast that into doubt.

The president said that what the US has done so far has been “tremendous success”. He ticked through how Iran’s Navy has been sunk, its Air Force has been destroyed, and its radar and anti-aircraft equipment disabled.

But he added that he wanted to ensure that Iran could not develop weaponry to target the US, Israel or any American allies “for a very long time”.

That, however, is a bigger task. And, in the end, it might require the kind regime change that Trump has been unable to achieve so far.

  4. Trump has not revealed who he thinks should lead Iranpublished at 22:43 GMT

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Travelling with the president

Trump very clearly views the new supreme leader of Iran, the son of the slain Ayatollah Khamenei, as unacceptable.

But what he has yet to make clear is who his preferred option is, or how they would be able to take over the governance of the country.

At the same time, Trump says that Iran's leadership is decimated, which begs the question of who exactly he wants to lead.

I asked Trump that, and his response is telling. He clearly wants someone internal, and said as much, explicitly saying that Venezuela's Delcy Rodriguez is a model.

But many questions remain on Trump's choice. By his own admission, many of Iran's leaders are dead, and some moderate options have reportedly been killed in the US strikes.

  5. In 'conflicts like this, you always have death' - Trumppublished at 22:35 GMT

A reporter has asked how many US deaths Trump is willing to endure in this war, after a seventh combat death of a US service member war was confirmed.

"When you have conflicts like this, you always have death," Trump responds.

The president says he met with the families of the fallen troops at Dover Air Force Base two days ago.

Trump says all of the families had the same message for him: "[They said] 'finish the job sir, please finish the job'."

The news conference ends as the president gives the gathered reporters a thumbs-up and walks out.

  6. Trump lays out US victories in Iranpublished at 22:29 GMT

Trump says although the US has had many victories in Iran, Washington is "going to go further".

"We wiped them out in the first two days," he says of the US' early strikes on Iran's leadership and fighting capabilities.

He says Iran's navy and air force have both been destroyed, as well as many of their weapons.

"The missiles are down to a trickle, the drones are down to probably 25%, and they will soon be down to nothing."

He adds the Iran's drone manufacturing facilities are "under fire as we speak."

  7. War will not end this week, but 'very soon' - Trumppublished at 22:26 GMT

Taking a question from a reporter on how long the US military "excursion" into Iran will last, Trump says the operation will end "soon" - but not this week.

"I think soon. Everything [Iran] have is gone, including their leadership," he says.

"Most people haven't even heard of the leader they're talking about (to replace the ayatollah)," Trump says.

  8. Putin wants to be 'helpful' in Middle East - Trumppublished at 22:21 GMT

Taking questions from reporters, Trump elaborates about his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier today.

"We were talking about Ukraine, which is just a never-ending fight," he says.

"There's tremendous hatred between President Putin and President Zelensky, they can't seem to get it together. But I think it was a positive call on that subject."

He adds that they also talked about the Middle East, and Putin "wants to be helpful."

"I said, 'you could be more helpful by getting the Ukraine the war over with. That will be more helpful.' But we had a very good talk."

Also on Monday, Putin congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on becoming Iran’s new supreme leader and reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Tehran, according to a message published on the Kremlin website.

  9. Iran was 'not negotiating in good faith' over nuclear programme - Trumppublished at 22:16 GMT

Trump says even after the US first struck Iranian nuclear sites last summer, Iran had plans to build nuclear weapons and says Iran was not negotiating in good faith about ending its nuclear programme.

He says that instead, Iran "was trying to reconstitute its weapons programme at a different site".

"They started the process while rapidly building conventional ballistic missiles... that threatened our overseas bases and soon could have reached our homeland."

"The regime's intention was to use this exponentially growing ballistic missile threat to make it virtually impossible to prevent them from obtaining a nuclear weapon," Trump says

  10. Trump says US has other targets in Iran that could be taken out 'in one day'published at 22:09 GMT

Trump says there are still several targets the US hasn't hit yet - but which could be taken "out in one day".

"We're waiting to see what happens before we hit them", he says.

He adds that these targets are very easy to hit but that damage to these locations could be devastating for Iran.

He says the US is working faster than its initial estimated timeline for this operation.

"We did not think after a month we'd be here", he says, 10 days after the US and Israel began striking Iran.

  11. Trump is bullish but offers little new informationpublished at 22:07 GMT

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Travelling with the president

I'm currently in Trump's press conference, jammed in between cameras and several dozen reporters.

Trump is clearly bullish about the conflict, claiming that 90% of Iranian missile launchers have so far been destroyed.

There was also an implicit threat of heavy strikes yet to come, depending on what happens.

So far, there is very little new. Trump has repeated most of these points over the last few days.

He has yet to mention Iran's new Supreme Leader by name, noting only that the US still wants a hand in choosing Iran's new leadership.

  12. US making 'major strides' in Iran as 5,000 targets struck - Trumppublished at 22:00 GMT

After speaking to congressional Republicans a few minutes ago, US President Donald Trump is now addressing reporters at a news conference.

He starts by saying saying the US has made "major strides" and the mission is "pretty much complete".

"[We have] completely wiped every single force in Iran," he said.

The president adds that more than 5,000 targets have been struck so far, including locations responsible for drone manufacturing, Iranian naval power and missile capability.

"Their missile capability is down to about 10% - maybe less," he says.

  13. What did Trump say to congressional Republicans about Iran?published at 21:59 GMT

US President Donald Trump has been speaking to congressional Republicans at a party conference in Florida.

He made comments about the US war in Iran describing it as a "little excursion" away from his agenda. Here's a recap of what he said,

    • Trump says he ordered strikes on Iran first because "within a week they were going to attack" the US. "They had all these missiles far more than anyone thought," he says
    • The president says the US has destroyed 80% of Iran's missile launchers and navy adding that while the US has achieved many victories in the war, there was more to come
    • "We have already won in many ways, but we haven't won enough," Trump says. "We go forward more determined that will achieve ultimate victory that will end this long-running danger once and for all."
    • He acknowledged the war is having some economic impacts saying the US stock market, which has slumped, were "going to go a lot higher as soon as we get rid of this stuff that we're doing right now... We really had no choice."

The president is now holding a news conference and we are listening in for new lines on Iran.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it has launched a broad wave of attacks against "targets of the Iranian terrorist regime in Tehran". It's the second attack launched by Israel today.

  15. Trump says Iran strikes have pushed Gulf closer to USpublished at 21:26 GMT

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Travelling with the president

At the speech in Miami, Trump has again repeated the administration's rationale for launching the strikes on Iran - suggesting that the war was a preemptive strike.

Iran, he says, was increasingly prepared to launch strikes on its neighbours and potentially a nuclear weapon at Israel, had they been able to successfully manufacture a device.

This claim is often repeated by Trump and other administration officials, some of whom have said that Iran could have rapidly enriched uranium to a weapons-grade 90% within weeks.

Firm evidence has not been provided by the administration.

The president is also dismissive of the impact of Iran's strikes on Gulf neighbours, noting that many of those countries were "kind of neutral" but have been pushed closer to the US.

That's something that several defence experts told me this week. Iran, they said, was hoping to add pressure on the Gulf countries to lobby Trump to stop the strikes, but ultimately may have accomplished the opposite.

  16. Trump says the war is going to 'be finished pretty quickly'published at 21:21 GMT

President Donald Trump is continuing with his speech, saying the war will "be finished pretty quickly".

"Within a week they were going to attack us 100%. They were ready. They had all these missiles far more than anyone thought, and they were going to attack us, but they were going to attack all of the Middle East and Israel.

"And if they had a nuclear weapon, they would have used it on Israel. And this was going to be a major attack. I know they had all of those missile sites and all those launchers that we got rid of, about 80% of them right now, by the way, got rid of most of the, you know, see, it's died down to a trickle. They have very few launches left."

Trump continues by saying the military had been "amazing".

"And the missiles have been largely knocked out. the drones have been knocked down, and we're hitting where they make the drones," Trumps says.

"We know them all, and we're knocking the hell out of that. Now, where they manufacture the drones. A lot of work, a lot of brilliant work. But we're going to have a much safer world as soon as it's finished, and it's going to be finished pretty quickly."

  17. Trump says US hasn't 'won enough' in Iranpublished at 21:11 GMT
    Breaking

Trump is speaking about Iran again in Florida, a couple of hours after saying the war is "very complete, pretty much".

He says: "We took a little excursion because we felt we had to do that to get rid of some evil. Then, I think you'll see it's going to be a short term excursion."

He goes on to say: "We've already won in many ways, but we haven't won enough. We go forward, more determined than ever to achieve ultimate victory that will end this long running danger once and for all. "

Trump also refers to the killing of Iran's most senior military leader during his first term, Qasem Soleimani.

He says: "They may have been much more capable than they are, had he lived. Because he was capable. He was vicious, violent and capable. But we got rid of him first."

  18. Trump says US is 'crushing the enemy', together with Israeli partnerspublished at 21:07 GMT

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Travelling with the president

Trumps remarks so far have provided little detail into Operation Epic Fury, or his plans for Iran.

The president, however, is clearly pleased with how this is going from a military standpoint, lauding the capabilities of the US military and their success in the war so far.

"Together with our Israeli partners, we're crushing the enemy and overwhelming display of technical skill and military force," he said.

Notably, Trump says that "now nobody has any idea who the people are that are going to be the head of the country" - suggesting, perhaps, he's dismissive of Iran's new Supreme Leader or willing to dial back the air offensive.

"We haven't won enough," he added.

  19. Trump praises US military as he speaks to Republican lawmakerspublished at 21:04 GMT

Donald Trump has just taken the stage at the Republican lawmaker's retreat in Miami, to raucous applause as the song often known as "Proud To Be An American" blasted from the speakers.

Trump immediately turns to domestic issues but says the US was drawn into a "short-term" military operation to "get rid of some very evil people".

"How good is our military?," he asked the crowd. "I rebuilt the military... I didn't think I'd have to use it so much in my second term."

This is a nod to an important domestic politics, with high gas prices presenting a potential problem for the President, who often points to lower petrol prices as a sign that his economic agenda is effective.

Many of those in the crowd will be anxious to hear how he plans to address that issue ahead of what House Speaker Mike Johnson referred to as "the most consequential" midterms of our lifetimes.
