This appeal is very different from the trial itself – for a start, the triple murderer isn’t even in court. She’s watching the proceedings via a video link from prison.
The hearing so far has been a bit more conversational in approach too.
The judges are going over the arguments of Patterson's team carefully, there's regular back-and-forth about points made, what exactly is meant by them and whether or not they are fair concerns.
Because this is an appeal, there is lots of discussion about the law itself, and citing of other cases.
And the judges are pushing the lawyers on a lot of points.
Ultimately, Patterson's team started the hearing by referring to the idea that justice needs to be done, but it also needs to be seen to be done. In other words, they say the perception of the fairness of the trial matters just as much as the actual fairness of it.
