Jeffrey Donaldson sentenced to 15 years - a recappublished at 14:12 BST
Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for child sex abuse, including rape. Here's a recap of what happened today:
- Donaldson entered the dock in courtroom one of Newry Crown Court, flanked by two prison officers. This was the first time he had been seen outside prison since a pre-sentence hearing in September.
- As he began addressing the court, Judge Paul Ramsey set out that Donaldson was convicted unanimously by a jury on 18 counts. He described the case as "disturbing and disquieting".
- As he sentenced Donaldson, Judge Ramsey asked him to stand and told him his offences had led to a "catastrophic descent into disgrace".
- In a statement following its former leader's sentencing, the DUP said "justice has been done" for Donaldson's "vile and disgusting crimes against his victims".
- Speaking outside Newry Crown Court after the sentencing hearing, Det Ch Insp Leah Crothers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland told reporters that "the police service and our criminal justice system has sent a clear message: No-one is above the law".
- Head of the PPS's serious crime unit Catherine Kierans said "it took great courage for the victims in this case to speak out".
- A short time later, Donaldson was placed into the prison van and transported back to Maghaberry Prison to serve his sentence.
- Luke Sproule reports on how the testimony of Donaldson's victims brought him to justice.
