BBC drops explosive new Vigil series 3 trailer ahead of the hit drama's return

The BBC has released a tense new trailer for the hit drama Vigil and announced that the series will return to screens on BBC iPlayer and BBC One from Sunday 30 August.* The six-part series, made by World Productions (Line of Duty, Until I Kill You, Showtrial), part of ITV Studios, was filmed in Svalbard and Scotland.

The new trailer teases the action-packed third instalment of the International Emmy-winning and BAFTA-nominated drama which sees DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) return for a high-stakes investigation that takes them to a remote Arctic research station, where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead.

Amy and Kirsten will need to catch the killer and defuse a potential international confrontation, as different nations compete for control of the Arctic and its resources in the changing polar climate, with both their careers and relationship on the line. As the mission rapidly unfolds, Amy and Kirsten begin to question who they can trust.

Alongside Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie, the trailer shows the return of Dominic Mafham, reprising his role as Sir Ian Downing, as well as new cast for series three: Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom, The Trip) as Henrick Becken - Svalbard’s Chief of Police; Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh, Wolfe), as Shen Jia – a microbiologist; Tornike Gogrichiani (Extraction 2, Drops of God) as Fyodor, a Russian Colonel; Steven Miller (Dept. Q, Shetland) and Benjamin Wainwright (Maigret, Belgravia: The Next Chapter) as Special Boat Service operators, Mark Cunningham and Oli Pickford respectively; Danusia Samal (Red Eye, The Great) as Jasmine Kelly, working alongside Sir Ian Downing; Eric Godon (In Bruges, Anna) as Mayor Korotayev, and Amy Manson (Rebus, Bodies) as Lorna McCallister, a geologist. Gary Lewis will also be reprising his role as DSU Robertson who continues to work closely with Amy and Kirsten.

The cast for series 3 also includes Artur Zai Barrera (The Old Man, Lucky), Jordan Duvigneau (Mood, Stolen Girl), Kaisa Hammarlund (Hijack, Grace), Adam Fidusiewicz (FBI International, A Gentleman in Moscow), Conor Berry (Karen Pirie, Schemers), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows, The Balled of a Small Player), Steven Cree (All of You, Heads of State), Killian Coyle (Shetland, Endeavour), Derek Riddell (Industry, Happy Valley), Alma Prelec (Secret Service, Fifteen Love), Dawn Sievewright (Undertow, Shetland) and Shereen Cutkelvin (Summerwater, Crime).

Vigil (6x60’) series three is made by World Productions in association with ITV Studios for the BBC. It is written and created by Tom Edge and additional writers for this series are Tom Mair and Eve Hedderwick Turner. The producer is Marcus Wilson, and associate producer is George Aza-Selinger. Executive producers are Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, and Tom Edge. Stephanie Fyfe is the commissioning executive for the BBC. The series is directed by Gareth Bryn (Karen Pirie, The Gathering) and Faye Gilbert (The Bay, The Tower). ITV Studios handles the international distribution.

*Two episodes of Vigil will be available weekly on BBC iPlayer from Sunday 30 August, with the series airing Sunday and Monday nights at 9pm on BBC One from this date.
