| | Despite all the healthy eating information, we eat about 38,000 tonnes of chips every week. Chip shops are selling more than 250 million meals every year. And Manchester's got some of the best chippies in the country!
Here's a few good 'uns:
No more nominations please! 'The best chippy in Manchester' is now closed. From deb in Swinton Manchester Armstrongs in Prestwich is top of my list for a local chippy. The jumbo cod deserves a mention
From Angie in Urmston Kongs in Flixton. It's definately the best you've ever had. I've never tasted gravy or curry sauce as good as theirs.
From kash in wigan I love down to earth people. they're great aren't they? I prefer maureen's chippy in wigan. she apparantely runs grayways coaches as well. maybe she should combine the two and provide a coach/chippy delivery business. or maybe not.
From Mandy Pollitt in Manchester CHURCH ROAD CHIPPY - NORTHENDEN. CAN'T BEAT DIMITRI'S FISH & CHIPS!!!!
From Karen in manchester Chruch Road Chippy in Northenden is spot-on!
From Tarquin in Cheadle Hulme Whittaker's in Cheadle Hulme. Would've been Plummer's in Fallowfield some years ago but lost the plot when they changed hands.
From Derek in Oldham Stevens, Ashton Road, Oldham
From kate borge in Malta "Ramplins Chippy" in Middleton shopping centre has to be the best fish & chips for me, I always have a "chippy meal" when I am in the uk, Till now, They are the best for me.
From karl in salford there aint no good chippys left.
From chris in altrincham Matthew callaghan your right! everyone else, sorry but you're completely wrong! The chippy in Heald Place is the best. a great old fashioned back street chippy where everything is cooked from fresh. i regularly travel from the other side of manchester, 'cause it's that good.
From Alexandra in Manchester THE FULL MONTY ON LIVERPOOL ROAD. BEST PIZZAS ON A FRIDAY NITE 4 ME N MY MATES!-HI CALAIRE N AMY
From stephen burt in singapore Petes Chippy in Macclesfield simply the best
From SHEEDY in URMSTON CHARLIES CHIP SHOP URMSTON
From Eleanor Giles in London ex-pat Manc The Charcoal Pit in Altrincham. By far the best cheesburger and chips on God's green earth. Always a favourite part of my weekend visits home.
From Nell in Bury Got to say Armstrong's in Prestwich on Bury Old Road, again. Absolute class and good sized portions.
From Matthew McEneaney in Auckland, New Zealand George's Chip Shop on Eccles New Road, next door to Swan Taxi's, great Chip's & Kebabs, sadly I think it gone now, but when I lived in Manchester that was business. Matt (Auckland, New Zealand) From Will Scott in Manchester Olympus Chippy in Bolton town centre. Best chips I've had outside of Yorkshire, and they give you scraps too at no extra cost! From chris in manchester best chippy in manchester is the church road chippy in northenden, closely followed by chips n gravy outside maine road. From claire r in eccles manchester eccles fish bar on liverpool road is best hot fresh chis everytime and you cannot beat therechicken donners mmmm lovely From Richard Stancliffe in Manchester Half rice half chips and curry sauce to die for it has to be The Red lantern on whittaker Lane Prestwich From Andy in Rochdale One of the best Chippy's in Rochdale is Cutgate Chippy, Cutgagate Rochdale, just on the Edenfield Road, in the shopping Mall. Always consistant, fresh, and nice generous portions. From Malc W in Ashton-u-Lyne The Station Chippy in Picc Gardens is top, especially when you've had a few bevvies. In Ashton, The Fish Net is good for choices and cook in healthy oil and The Gold Medal in the Precinct does mean Chips & Gravy and Blackcurrant From John Cameron in Whitefield I know it's already been nominated, but Armstrongs in Prestwich is by far the best around. The home of the Jumbo Cod cannot be beaten! From Kym in Manchester I Agree with Matthew about Nick's Chippy in Rusholme. Nick opened it up after retiring from the buses many years ago and his son Victor now keeps to the same extremely high standards. One of the very few traditional chippies left in Manchester. Well done From - lizzy in manchester im in argentina at the moment, and the thing i miss most is chips and mayonaise from captain cods on northenden road in sale. From lucy f Chorlton Chippy
From Madge in Manchster Station chippy on Picadilly plaza, batter and mushy peas to die for!!
From kevin bracegirdle in Tyldesley Manchester England The Lotus chippy on Bolton Rd Atherton is the best chippy in my area, it has large portions, is well cooked, full of flavour, the staff are pleasent,it is good value for money over all it is the best. From Frank Jones in Coram,New York,USA Thompsons on Victoria Ave ,Blackley I'd jump on a plane right now for some Fish Chips n Mushy peas!!!!!!!! (If the wife would let me!!) Also the two in Middleton town centre were reet good! From John in Rochdale Another vote for Tony's on Oldham Road in Rochdale. Piping hot, crisp ('cept the mushy peas!) and mouthwatering. The queues tell you all you need to know. From - joe noonan in manchester andertons in salford pie chips and gravy £1.25p u cannot beat it. it is fab From Ken Halliday in Warrington Brians in Headingley, Leeds, Yorkshire. Because only Yorkshire chippies still use dripping, and not this nancy tasteless oil. From peggy robinson in sedbergh the top chippy leigh road boothstown I travel 70 miles on a regular basis for the fish chips and scallops from here. they are fantastic From Steve Giblin in Ashton Under Lyne Mr Cod on Market Street is the best, they have to smap the fish in half to get it in the tray. Tastes Supreme! From Terry in Oldham Tony's on Oldham Road, Rochdale. I don't think there is a Tony's on Manchester Road, Rochdale: they've probably got the address wrong. However, it's always been top class. Brian's on Melrose Street in Clayton must give the best value for fish. They're about a foot long!
From Derek in Salford Having lived in fishing ports all my life before coming to Manchester - I would have to say there are no good chippies here. The nearest to a good ship shop in Manchester is Harry Ramsdens or the Alderley Edge chippie. To be a great chip shop it needs to serve Haddock - with the skin on, in batter. Nothing else will do. From Ian in Liverpool harry's, dover road, maghull.because it's not in manchester. From Rebecca in Burnage Chow's on Burnage Lane. Its well good, they haven't changed the decor (or the recipies) since the '80s - and they don't need to neither!
From Matthew Callaghan in Manchester Heald Place, Rucholme. This chippy was opened by the current owners father 50 odd years ago and though having the strangest opening times is the best chippy I have ever been to.
From Mark Simpson at the Post Office Armstrongs in Prestwich is the most fab chippy in the north west !!
From Wendy Marsh in Blackpool The Dolphin in Reddish is fantastic!!
