The nominees

Morrissey

What can you say? An album that sits alongside his best work, sell-out shows across the city, closing the music chapter of the G-Mex’s history… if there were any doubts about Morrissey’s return to the top of the tree, he’s dispelled them in the last 12 months.

Oasis

Noel takes hold of the reins once again, leading the line as the band hand-pick the ‘best of’ compilation Stop The Clocks and then thrilling everyone lucky enough to get in with acoustic sets at the Lowry, Night and Day and some fella in Poynton’s front room! All that and the news that they’re to be honoured at the BRITs with an award for Outstanding Contribution To Music.

Simon Webbe

Flying from the debris of Blue and into success is one thing, keeping up momentum by producing a mature and classy second album is something else. Webbe not only showed that he’s got the staying power to make it alone, but by booking in dates at the Arena next year, proved that he’s getting bigger all the time.

Take That

The power of TV and a drunken decision brings everyone’s favourite boy band back for an emotional homecoming at the Arena, followed by an amazing show at the City of Manchester Stadium. What’s more, they’ve even managed to get Jason to sing lead vocals! The dawning of a new kind of group, the man band.

The Longcut

Great shows, a great album and the ability to drag people away from Badly Drawn Boy at Cohesion add up to something of a special year for The Longcut. They called, we definitely responded, and one of the most exciting new bands the city has produced in a long time stepped into the spotlight.
