The BBC Voices's project is about giving local people the opportunity to have their say about what’s happening where they live.

BBC Leicester Voices will be working with Leicester's Somali community for the next few months, building up contacts with local people and organisations, finding out what’s going on and joining in.

Many members of the Somali community have come to the city in the last 18 months.

The majority have come on their EU passports from Holland and Sweden and chose to come to Leicester because of our reputation for strong community relations.

We will be establishing a community archive and contrasting their arrival with that of East African Asians in the early 1970's. In the longer term we will develop Somali links on BBC Radio Leicester’s new "Into Africa" programme and also hope to assist the community to launch an RSL station.
