Ian Humphreys made a memorable debut, as he notched 16 points in a flawless kicking display in his first start for Leicester at Welford Road.

Tigers' Head Coach Pat Howard was without 15 players through international call-ups and injuries, and gambled on the inexperience half-back partnership of Humphreys and Johnny Murphy.

"I have been impressed with them over the whole time I have known them and we gave them the start to see if they could make their way."

He also put Gavin Hickie was on the front row, and Howard says he's impressed with the performance of all three players:

"It was a massive step up for those three. They are all third choice at the club and have shown a fair amount of character to show there's not a big gap between number one and number three.

You have to have the right attitude and they saw there would be an opportunity at this time of year.

I have been impressed with them over the whole time I have known them and we gave them the start to see if they could make their way."

London Irish had suffered heavy defeats on their previous two visits to the East Midlands and were behind after two minutes following a breath-taking try from Varndell.

The visitors stayed that way throughout the match, but Shane Geraghty's six penalties cut the Tigers advantage at full time to eight points.
