The Corn Exchange in Leeds

The first destination on our online tour of Leeds is a striking oval building situated at the bottom of Vicar Lane. It is situated near those other local gems the Kirkgate Market and The White Cloth Hall.

"One of Britain's finest Victorian buildings was completed in 1864.

"The architect was Cuthbert Broderick (responsible for several other fine buildings in Leeds, including the Town Hall).

"A vast oval hall with windows in the oval roof to include direct sunlight to make judging the corn samples more accurate.

"In 1998-90 the whole building was restored with a variety of shops and cafes. New staircases were added for ready access to all levels.
