Definition: 

The midterms (or midterm elections) are general elections which are held at the midpoint of a presidency.

More:

This is usually 2 years in to a 4-year term. All members of the House of Representatives are up for re-election in the midterms (in additon to approximately a third of the Senate) and the results can change the political landscape.

Note: it can be spelt as midterm or mid-term

Examples:

'Tuesday’s elections—the first midterms of the Trump Presidency—will shape the next two years of American politics, at least.'
