Introduction
Do you want a house that's a bit, sort of or a lot bigger? Neil and Pippa talk about why they chose to live where they do while grammar guru Georgie explains how to use 'a bit', 'sort of' and 'a lot' with comparisons, as well as how to compare something to a clause.
_____________
Grammar explanation
Modifying comparisons
Especially when we are speaking, we can use informal expressions like 'a bit', 'sort of' and 'a lot' to modify comparisons - say how small or big the difference is.
Examples:
My house is a lot older than yours.
My new house is a bit more comfortable than my old house.
That flat is sort of nicer than the others I've seen.
clauses after the word 'than'
We can use a clause after the word 'than' to give more detail about what we are comparing something to
Examples:
My house is a lot older than most of the places I've lived.
The bedrooms are a bit more cosy than those in the other house we looked at.
