And I’m Tom. Hi everyone!  Today we’re talking about teenagers, homework and the brain.

Did you do your homework when you were a teenager, ਮਤਲਬ ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ?

Yeah I did, but, often at the last minute, which means as late as possible!

ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਕੂਲ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਾਂ ਬਾਪ ਲਈ ਸਿਰ ਦਰਦੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਪਾਈ ਜਿਹੜੀ  ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਲਦੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

And today’s guest is a neuroscientist, so get ready for some difficult vocabulary!

A neuroscientistਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈਮਨੋ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ।ਅੱਜ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਬਰBBC Radio 4 ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ The Life Scientificਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲਈ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਮਨੋ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ Sarah-Jayne Blackmore ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਭਾਗ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ‘pre-frontal cortex’ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਦੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਦਿਮਾਗ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਕਿਥੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ‘tasks’ ਲਈ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਹੈ।

Neuroscientist
The pre-frontal cortex is the part of the brain right at the front, just behind the forehead. And it's involved in a whole range of very high-level cognitive tasks such as decision-making and planning.

So, unsurprisingly, the pre-frontal cortex is at the front of the brain, just behind the forehead.

Correct.  Forehead ਮਤਲਬ ਸਾਡਾ ਮੱਥਾ।‘head’ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਅਗੇਤਰ ‘fore’ ਲਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਜਾਂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ‘Forehead’ ਦਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਸਿਰ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ। ਇਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਜੁਲਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੈ ‘forethought’ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰ।

Yeah.If we ‘give something some forethought’, it means we think first, or plan.

ਦਿਮਾਗ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਲੈਨਿੰਗ ਲਈ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ‘decision-making’ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਵੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ‘high-level’ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਿਸ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ?

Cognitive ਮਤਲਬ ਸੰਵੇਦਨਸ਼ੀਲ। ਇਹ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। Cognitive tasks ਇਹ ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ।

Tom
And she also used the expression ‘a whole range of’ cognitive tasks.

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
A whole range of ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਜੋੜ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਪੈਮਾਨੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਿੰਨਤਾ ਵੀ। ਯਾਨੀ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਜੋ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੈ।

Note that the presenter says ‘tasks’.   I say ‘tasks’ and this is because of our different British accents. Both are fine, so use whichever one’s easiest for you.

ਮਨੋ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ ਨੇ ਦਿਮਾਗ ਦੀ ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ adolescent years ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਬਦਲਾਵਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ। ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ‘expectations’ ਮਤਲਬ ਉਮੀਦਾਂ ਅਤੇ‘development’ ਯਾਨੀ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਸੀ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ।

Neuroscientist
We know that this region is undergoing very, very large amounts of development during the adolescent years. And so in terms of  the expectations that we place on teenagers, to, for example, plan their homework, might be too much given that we know that the region of the brain that’s critically involved in planning is not developed yet.

Tom
Aha! So, in the last sentence she mentions that the area of the brain involved in planning isn’t developed yet!

That’s right! ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਮੀਦਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹਨ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ। ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ‘might be too much’ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣਨਾ।

Did you catch it? She said ‘given that’.

Given thatਇਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਜਾਂ ਤੱਥ ਉੱਪਰ ਗੌਰ ਕਰਨਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਰਾਨਾ।

So, given that we know that teenagers’ brains are still developing, is it fair to expect them to be as good at planning as adults are? What do you think?
