આજે અમે ચર્ચા કરીશું કે અંગ્રેજીમાં સંદેશાનાં અંતમાં ‘X’ નું અર્થ કઈ રીતે ‘kiss’ બની ગયું. ‘Kiss’ ને ગુજરાતીમાં કહીશું ચુંબન. Do you put Xs on the end of your messages, Tom?

I do, actually, yes, but only with my mother!

મિત્રો, શું તમને ખબર છે કે ‘X’ સાથેનો પહેલો પત્ર ક્યારે લખવામાં આવ્યો હતો? અને એમાં કેટલા ‘X’ હતાં? જાણવા માટે BBC Radio 4 દ્વારા Word of Mouthકાર્યક્રમ માટે તૈયાર કરવામાં આવેલા સમાચાર સાંભળો. સમાચારમાં જે આંકડાઓ જણાવવામાં આવ્યું છે તેના ઉપર ખાસ ધ્યાન આપજો!

Well, we’ve been adding Xs, for kisses, at the bottom of our letters, since at least 1763, so the very first one we know of had seven Xs!

Wow! More than 250 years ago! And she said there were seven Xs!

That’s right! ‘X’ starts with a vowel sound.

Often, words which begin with vowel sounds can take the last sound of the word which comes before. ‘Seven Xs’, then, is pronounced ‘seveNexes’. I could also say ‘seveNever’.

Listen again for ‘seveNexes’. Which verb and preposition come before?

Know of નો ઉપયોગ ત્યારે કરવામાં આવે છે જ્યારે તમે ચોક્કસ છો કે કંઈક અસ્તિત્વમાં છે, પણ તેના વિશે પૂરતી માહિતી નથી.

So, we know of a piece of evidence – this is the old letter which contains Xs.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
પણ આનો અર્થ know about કરતાં ભિન્ન છે. Know about નો ગુજરીતામાં અર્થ થાય છે કોઈ બાબત અથવા વસ્તુ વિશે પૂર્ણ માહિતગાર હોવું.

We know of the letter, we still don’t understand our main question! We need to know about X. Why does X mean kiss in English?

So, X comes from the Roman alphabet! And they pronounced it ‘kss’.

તો અહીં બન્ને પ્રેઝન્ટરોtag question નો ઉપયોગ કરે છે. ગુજરાતીમાં tag question નો અર્થ થાય છે વાક્ય જે એક નાના પ્રશ્ન દ્વારા અનુસરવામાં આવે છે. મોટાભાગે પ્રશ્ન પુષ્ટિ કરવા માટે પૂછવામાં આવે છે.

So, after ‘it is’, we could say ‘isn’t it’.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
Correct! બન્ને પ્રશ્નો ઉપર ભાર મૂકવામાં આવ્યો છે અને પ્રશ્નો જવાબની અપેક્ષા સાથે પૂછવામાં આવ્યું છે. They have a rising intonation.

Tom

પ્રેઝન્ટર
બન્ને વ્યક્તિઓએ ‘tag question’ નો ઉપયોગ કરીને પોતાની વાતની ખરાઈ કરી નાંખી છે. મિત્રો, જે નવું શીખ્યા એ વિશે જણાવવા માટે બન્ને કયા રૂઢિપ્રયોગનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે? ચાલો બન્નેને ફરીથી સાંભળીએ.

Woman

They used the idiom the penny’s dropped.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
જ્યારે the penny has dropped, કહેવામાં આવે છે તો એનો અર્થ થયો કે કંઈક સ્પષ્ટપણે જાણવા મળ્યું છે.
