First Impressions
Look at the Session Vocabulary – make sure you know what these words mean:
- a first impression
- a handshake
- to judge
Quiz
Which one of these three things has an impact on people’s first impression of you:
- the colour of your eyes?
- how quickly you smile?
- the shape of your face?
Listen to Sam, Kee and Ammayyuu discussing the topic of ‘first impressions’ and find out the answer.
Listen to the audio and take the quiz.

Ammayyuu
Ashamaa! Gara English Together Afaan Ingilizii walii wajjiin mataduree tibbanaarratti mari’annuufi qooqa dubbachuuf si barbaachisu sii qoodnutti baga nagaan dhufte.

Sam
Hi, I’m Sam.
Kee
And I’m Kee. Welcome!
Ammayyuu
Har’a, waa’ee ‘first impressions’ miira jalqabaa fi yeroo jalqabaaf nama wayii yoo argite murtiin kennitu sirrii ta’uu isaa ilaalla.
Before we listen to the BBC Radio 4 news item on the topic, we have a quiz question based on research findings published by The Go Group: wantoota sadan kanneen keessaa kamtu hubannoo jalqabaa namoonni siif qabanirratti dhiibbaa qaba?
a) Waan ijikee fakkaatu
b) Si’oomina seeqakeetii
c) Danaa fuulakeetii
Deebii gulana siif deebisna.
Sam
What do you think? I think someone’s eyes are very important.
Kee
No, eyes? Handshakes are important for me. If they haven’t got a good strong handshake, they will not make a good impression on me.
Ammayyuu
The type of handshake ‘harka fuudhuu’ is not one of the options, Kee.
Kee
I don’t care. That’s the first thing I notice.
Sam
But, Kee, didn’t you hear the news the other day from Princeton University?
News insert
The moment we see a photograph of someone, we can make an instant judgement about them. But that doesn’t mean these first impressions are right, of course. A Professor from Princeton University in the U.S. has spent many years studying first impressions from faces and says there is no solid evidence that these judgements are correct about the character of the person.
Sam
See? That study says that you shouldn’t judge a person immediately when you first meet them…
Kee
Look, I know that’s what they say, but I can’t help it.
Sam
So, you always make an instant or snap judgement when you first meet new people, do you?
Ammayyuu
‘An instant judgement’ or ‘snap judgement’ ‘Murtii hoggasuma murteessan yookiin murtiin battaluma murteessan’ jechuun wayita nama wayii waliin walitti dhufte yaada/ilaalcha isaaf/isheef daftee qabaattudha. Did you make a snap judgment of me when you first met me?
Kee
Yes, of course, I did. My snap judgment was that you had a strong handshake and I thought you were very confident. Not like Sam!
Ammayyuu
Oh, Kee, thank you.
Sam
But, Kee, how can someone’s handshake really tell you anything about them? I think the old expression is true: ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’.
Ammayyuu
I agree Sam! ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’’ jechuun kitaaba qolasaatiin hinmurteessiin. Garuu namoonni hedduu akkana godhu. Otuma dubbannu, miira jalqabaa namoonni siif qaban irratti maaltu dhiibbaa akka uumuu danda’u durattii si gaafadhe yaadattaa?

Kee
Don’t judge a book by its cover is for people who don’t trust their instincts! I’m always right when I first meet someone.
Sam
Maybe not, Kee. The study says that first impressions are NOT a good way of judging someone’s character.
Ammayyuu
Sirrii jette! ‘Character’’ jechuun amala.
Sam
You really need to get to know someone before you can learn about their character, you know, know who they really are.
Kee
Yeah, but the few times I told myself to keep an open mind, my instincts ended up being right.
Ammayyuu
‘Keep an open mind’ jechuun sammuunkee yaada garaa garaa akka simatu taasisuudha. It’s always important to keep an open mind, I think.
Sam
Give me one example of when you’ve kept an open mind, Kee!
Kee
Look, I tried to keep an open mind when I first met you because I knew we would be working together…
Sam
…And?
Kee
And my instincts were correct! You smile too much.
Sam
What do you mean I smile too much? I’m friendly!
Ammayyuu
Eeyyeen Saam.
