_____________
Grammar explanation
Relative clauses
Relative clauses allow us to give information about a noun. We join the relative clause to the other clauses using words like:
- who
- where
- which
- that
- when
- whose
Defining relative clauses
Defining relative clauses give information that is essential to the sentence. If ithey are taken out the sentence doesn't make sense. Defining relative clauses are often used to identify what is being talked about.
Examples:
I took that job at a time when I needed more money.
That's the office where I had my first job.
I was the person whose job was to solve everyone else's problems.
Non-defining relative clauses
Non-defining relative clauses are used to give additional information. If you take them out of the sentence, the sentence still makes sense. When we write non-defining relative clause we use commas to separate them from other clauses.
Examples:
The office, which was near my house, was very well-equipped.
My manager, who I'd worked with before, was very helpful.
I had many great colleagues, whose support was very welcome.
