Introduction
A market can be a specific, physical location to buy things, but it can also be a more abstract economic system. There are some words that we often use together. These are called collocations. Learn some of the verbs that we often use with the noun 'market' with Georgie.
Common collocations with 'market'
put (something) on the market
If you put something on the market, you make it available for sale. This is commonly used when talking about property.
- My sister put her house on the market a year ago, but she's struggling to sell it.
break into a market
If you break into new markets, you enter new markets, often with difficulty.
- It took years of research for the brand to finally breakinto the European market.
supply the market
If you supply the market, you provide the necessary amount of a product to meet demand.
- The town has set up a new market. Now they need to find enough small businesses to supply the market.
flood the market
If you flood the market, it means there is too much of a product than people can buy.
- When cheaper imports flood the market, local businesses often struggle to keep up.

If we put something on the market, it means we make it available for sale.
I want to sell my house, but I haven't put it on the market yet.
Next, if a company wants to expand their customer base, they might want to break into new markets – to enter new markets, often with difficulty.
It took years of research for the brand to finally break into the European market.
Companies must then supply the market with their products – provide the necessary amount of a product to meet demand.
The farm supplies the local market with fresh vegetables every week.
But, too much of a product can flood the market – when there is too much of a product than people can buy.
Cheap laptops have flooded the market, so no one’s making a profit.
