Tunisia's prime minister fired after protests

Tunisia's president has dismissed the prime minister and suspended parliament, after violent mass protests across the country on Sunday.

The protests were due to the government's handling of a massive recent increase in Covid cases – along with general unrest over the nation's economic status.

The story

The President of Tunisia, Kais Saied, has sacked his prime minister, Hichem Mechichi, and suspended parliament following nationwide protests against the government's mishandling of the worsening coronavirus crisis.

Addressing an emergency meeting of military commanders, Mr Saied said the measures were aimed at saving the state.
