New Broadcasting House was officially re-opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 7th June, 2013 as the home of the BBC's radio, television, and digital services. However, the building has a much longer history than that - and quite an interesting history too!

The original Broadcasting House started its operations in June 1932 and received its first royal visit one month later from King George V and Queen Mary, who were Queen Elizabeth II's grandparents. Queen Elizabeth visited the building for the first time in March 1939 when she was still a princess and has officially visited the home of the BBC six times.

The BBC has a long history of running international broadcasts through the World Service radio and later through special television channels and online services. On 4th January 1938, its first foreign language broadcast took place. Presenter Ahmad Kamal Sourour Effendi delivered the radio broadcast in Arabic. Today, the BBC provides services in more than 25 languages.

Broadcasting House is in the centre of London. In World War 2, its location made it a target for German bombers. At five past eight on 15th October, 1940 it took a direct hit from a delayed action bomb which exploded 58 minutes later. Bruce Belfrage, who was reading the nine o'clock news, famously continued speaking with barely a pause to avoid alerting listeners to the explosion.

In the 1960s, Broadcasting House played an important role in popular music and on 16th March 1963, The Beatles visited for the first time. They performed six live songs including 'Please Please Me' and 'I Saw Her Standing There' for Saturday Club. Later that year, they would get their breakthrough in the USA and become the most famous band in the world.

And on 30th September 1967, Tony Blackburn presented the first ever programme on BBC's new Radio One service, which is the UK's most popular radio station today. What famous events and people will New Broadcasting House see? We are sure there will be many!
