Pronunciation: Practising –ough words

So, in 6 Minute Vocabulary we saw that those four letters can be pronounced in many different ways.

In this activity we're going to test your pronunciation of ough words, by looking at what they 'rhyme with'.

Rhymes

If two words rhyme, the last syllable sounds the same. For example, you can say cough rhymes with off. Look at these examples. Then listen to the recording:

cough – like off

enough – like stuff

though – like know

through – like true

thorough – like up, Edinburgh

thoughtlike or, fought

plough – like now

hiccough (also spelled 'hiccup') – like cup
