We are spending an average of two hours every day sharing, liking tweeting and updating. But what impact is all of this having on our mental health?

We don’t have specific evidence that says interaction with smartphone devices or social media cause negative impacts. However, there is a growing body of evidence about the harmful effects in the use of social technology. What we’ve seen is that rates of anxiety and depression amongst young children have increased by over 70% in the last 25 years.

Wow! Anxiety and depression have risen by 75% in 25 years! That’s terrible!

Come on! Social media hasn’t been around for 25 years! Lots of things make people feel depressed and anxious. Surely connecting with friends easily is a good thing?

Tom
Perhaps, but there’s also the idea that social media causes social isolation.

Social isolation means ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਇਕੱਲਤਾ ਭਾਵ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਖਰੇਵਾਂ। Why do you say that?

Well, people aren’t meeting and talking in real life. Instead, they communicate online using their online personas.

Aesthetic ਮਤਲਬ ਸੁਹਜ ਭਰਿਆ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ। Aesthetically ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਭਾਵ ਦਿੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਇੱਕਦਮ ਆਕਰਸ਼ਕ।

But it’s not natural for people to be constantly bombarded by social media posts, is it?

To be bombard by something ਮਤਲਬ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਧੱਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਬਾਰਬਾਰ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਨਾ।

Well, social media users experience a daily bombardment of perfect images. It’s easy to
feel anxious about your own life if everyone else’s seems to be better! I think social media makes it very easy to draw negative comparisons between our own lives and other people’s!

To draw negative comparisons ਮਤਲਬ ਨਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਤੁਲਨਾਵਾਂ ਕਰਨਾ।

Calm down! If social media is so bad for us, why are so many people using it?

And there are a lot of social media users! 3.2 ਬਿਲੀਅਨ ਲੋਕ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਹੀ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਜੁਆਬ ਹੈ।
