Grammar explanation

What are phrasal verbs?

A verb plus a particle (a preposition or adverb). e.g. break up, settle down, get on, go out etc. 

Verbs that take an object and can be separated

ask out, put on (a coat), turn off

Examples:

ask out
I asked my friend out.
I asked out my friend.
I asked her out.

Phrasal verbs that take an object but can't be separated

go out with, look after, bump into

Examples:

Phil went out with a girl from the USA.
I look after my dog. 
I bumped into my neighbour in the supermarket.

Phrasal verbs that don't take an object (unless you add 'with')

get on, settle down, break up

Examples:

The whole team get on really well.
Pippa is settled down now. She's married and lives with her husband. 
They broke up.
Phil broke up with his American girlfriend.
