And hello again everyone, I’m Tom. Good news for animal lovers! Today we are discussing penguins and asking the question ‘why do penguin waddle?'

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
To waddle - ਮਤਲਬ ਛੋਟੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਕਦਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਝੂਮਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਤੁਰਨਾ। ਅਸੀਂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ  ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਸੱਚੀਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਮਨੋਰੰਜਕ ਤੋਰ ਹੈ।

Let’s listen to the first part of today’s clip from BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme! The reporter is in the zoo.

Good idea! ਅੱਜ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਰਤਾ London Zoo ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੈਨਗੁਇਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਖੜੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤੋਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਤਜਰਬਿਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਚਲੋ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਝੂਮਕੇ ਚੱ ਲਣ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ।

With its tiny legs and stiff, upright posture a penguin has a waddle that's more than a little ungainly. But by installing a high-tech track in London Zoo, scientists will measure every tiny movement the birds make.

Did you hear that penguin? She mentions posture.

Posture ਮਤਲਬ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੜਦੇ ਜਾਂ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹੋ।ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੈਨਗੁਇਨਾ ਲਈ ‘stiff’,ਮਤਲਬ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਅਤੇ ‘upright’ਯਾਨੀ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ।

And she also describes the waddle as ‘ungainly’.

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
Ungainly ਯਾਨੀ ਭੱਦਾ ਜਾਂ ਬਦਸੂਰਤ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ  ‘awkward’ ਅਤੇ  ‘clumsy’ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ  ਵਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

The presenter actually uses a phrase before ‘ungainly’. But, what is it? Listen again after ‘the penguin has a waddle’…

She said ‘that’s more than a little ungainly’.

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
More than a little, ਇਥੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ‘quite’ ਭਾਵ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਹੱਦ ਤੱਕ। Why doesn’t she say ‘quiteungainly’? That’s much simpler!

Well, we often say this when we want to suggest something slightly negative in a more positive manner. Plus, the rhythm sounds good. Say with me to practise!

‘a little’
‘more than a little’
‘more than a little ungainly’!

Can you give us an example now?

Hmm… Working with you is more than a little difficult, sometimes! ਉਸਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਕੜਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਰੱਖ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੇ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਅੰਕੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਲਣਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

We can find stones or rocks with animal remains inside them. What’s the name for these? Let’s listen again!

A fossil ਮਤਲਬ ਬਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਕੰਕਾਰ। ਚਲੋ ਇੱਕ ਮਿੰਟ ਲਈ ਰੁਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਨਵੇਂ ਜ਼ਮਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਪੈਨਗੁਇਨਾਂ ਦਾ ‘stiff, upright posture’ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ‘tiny legs’ ਹਨ। ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਵੇਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਹਾਣੇ ਜ਼ਮਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਪੈਨਗੁਇਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਹੈ। ਚਲੋ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਪਤਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

The researchers will then compare this data with penguin fossils. They think that the ancient birds didn't waddle and had a more horizontal posture with different leg anatomy. The scientists suspect that as modern-day penguins became better adapted to swimming, they became more clumsy on land.

Tom
So, they aren’t the same!We’ve heard how modern penguins have an upright posture. Penguins in the past were the opposite!  They had a horizontal posture.

Horizontal, ਮਤਲਬ ਚਪਟਾ ਜਾਂ ਫ਼ਿਰ ਲੇਟਵਾਂ।  Which means they were lying flat!

Right! Their legs have probably adapted over time as their posture changed.

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
To adapt ਮਤਲਬ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਾਂ ਸਥਾਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਢੱਲ ਜਾਣਾ। ਅਸੀਂ ਅਕਸਰ ਵਾਕ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ‘adapt to’ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ  ਕਿਸੇ ‘ noun’ ਜਾਂ ‘verb‘ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ‘-ING‘ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਕਿ ਪੈਨਗੁਇਨ ਕਿਸ ਚੀਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਢੱਲ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ।

The scientists suspect that as modern-day penguins became better adapted to swimming, they became more clumsy on land.

So, penguins adapted to swimming. This means the anatomy,or structure, of their legs changed to become more suitable for water.

And that’s why they’re clumsy, ਮਤਲਬ ਬੇਝੰਗੇ ਹਨ!
