మనం ఏదైనా కొత్త ప్రదేశానికి వెళ్లినప్పుడు మనకు కావాలసిన information - సమాచారాన్ని ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో polite గా అంటే మర్యాదపూర్వకంగా ఎలా అడగాలో తెలుసుకుందాం. ముందుగా Adam ముగ్గురు విభిన్న వ్యక్తులతో జరిపిన సంభాషణను విందాం. అతను ‘the ne arest supermarket’ అంటే దగ్గరలో ఉన్న సూపర్ మార్కెట్ గురించి information అడుగుతున్నారు. ఎలా అడుగుతున్నారో జాగ్రత్తగా గమనించండి. మీకు పూర్తిగా అర్థం కాకపోయినా ఫరవాలేదు. నేను మీకు సహాయం చేస్తాను.

Hello! Sorry to bother you. Do you know where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Man
Yes, I do. Go straight down here, then turn left… 

Adam
Hi there. Can you tell me where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Woman 2
Yes, of course I can. It’s just down here on the right…

No, I think he was talking to strangers, people he didn’t know. So he was being very polite.

అవును. ఆ ముగ్గురు వ్యక్తులెవరో అతనికి తెలీదు. అందుకని అతను చాలా polite గా అడిగారు.  Sam, what words and phrases did Adam use to ask people politely?

Sam
Well, he used ‘please’ a lot! And also ‘excuse me’ and ‘sorry to bother you’ in a polite voice or intonation.

అతను, వాళ్ల దృష్టి తనవైపు తిప్పుకోవడానికి మూడు phrases  వాడారు.

Sam
Absolutely! And then he asked for the same thing, but in three different ways.

సరే, మొదటి ప్రశ్న మళ్లీ విందాం.

అతను ‘Where’s…’ అని ప్రశ్న మొదలుపెడుతూ తనకు కావాల్సిన సమాచారాన్ని అడిగారు. ‘Where’ and ‘is’..ఈ రెండిటినీ కలిపి ‘Where’s గా పలకొచ్చు. ఇక్కడ ‘where’ కాకుండా వేరే పదాలు కూడా వాడొచ్చు.

Yeah, you can say ‘What’s the nearest supermarket?’ or ‘Which is the nearest supermarket?’

Ok, మొదటి ప్రశ్న ‘Do you know where…?’ - ‘మీకు తెలుసా ఎక్కడ ఉందో…?’ అంటూ మొదలయ్యింది.

And the second question started with ‘Can you tell me where…?’

సౌమ్య
‘Can you tell me where…?’ – ‘ఎక్కడుందో చెప్పగలరా...?’ రెండు ప్రశ్నలూ ఎలా ముగించారు? Sam చెప్తారు వింటూ ప్రాక్టీస్ చెయ్యండి. ముఖ్యంగా ‘is’ ఎక్కడ వస్తోందో గమనించండి.

Ready? Repeat after me:

గమనించారా?  Indirect questions లో వెర్బ్ ‘is’ అనేది ప్రశ్నంతా అడిగిన తరువాత చివర్లో వస్తోంది. సరే, ఇప్పుడు కొంత సాధన చేద్దాం. టాయిలెట్ ఎక్కడ ఉంది అని ఒక అపరిచితుడిని మీరడగాలి. ఎలా అడుగుతారు? ‘Where’ అని మొదలుపెట్టండి. ‘Please’ అనడం మర్చిపోకండి. తరువాత Sam కూడా జవాబు చెప్తారు. విని, మీ వాక్యాన్ని సరిపోల్చుకోండి.

Great! ఇప్పుడు మళ్లీ అదే ప్రశ్న indirect గా అడగండి. ఇందులో ‘is’ ఎక్కడ రావాలో గుర్తుందిగా?

సౌమ్య
Good! ‘Can you tell me where the toilet is, please?’ అని కూడా చెప్పొచ్చు. ఇప్పుడు మీకు ఎవరైనా తెలియని వ్యక్తులను polite గా information అడగడం ఎలాగో వచ్చేసింది.
