It’s enormously popular here in the UK, too. In fact, people are starting to worry that too much social media might have an adverse effect on our health.

An adverse effect 부작용이라는 뜻입니다. 오늘은 BBC Radio Foyle의 Sunday Sequence 를 들어보도록 하겠습니다. 두명이 소셜미디어와 아이들에 대해 얘기하는 내용인데요. 여기서 depression 우울중과 anxiety 불안에 대해 어떻게 얘기하는지 한 번 들어보세요

We are spending an average of two hours every day sharing, liking, tweeting and updating. But what impact is all of this having on our mental health?

We don’t have specific evidence that says interaction with smartphone devices or social media cause negative impacts. However, there is a growing body of evidence about the harmful effects of the use of social technology. What we’ve seen is an increase in rates of anxiety and depression in young children and young teens have increased by over 70% in the last 25 years.

Tom
Wow! Anxiety and depression have risen by 75% in 25 years! That’s terrible!

Rob
Come on! Social media hasn’t been around for 25 years! Lots of things make people feel depressed and anxious. Surely connecting with friends easily is a good thing?

Tom
Perhaps, but there’s also the idea that social media causes social isolation.

Bolam
Social isolation은 사회적 고립이라는 뜻입니다. Why do you say that?

Tom
Well, people aren’t meeting and talking in real life. Instead, they communicate online using their online personas.

Bolam
An online persona 인터넷 상의 우리모습이라는 뜻인데요. 이렇게 인터넷 상에서 표현되는 우리 모습은 어느정도 이상적으로 표현이 되겠죠? So Rob is creating an online persona when he edits his photos?

Tom
Exactly!

Rob
Hey!

Tom
Well, all of your photos, Rob, are of you having fun. And they’re all aesthetically perfect! It’s just not accurate!

Rob
That’s just not fair!

Bolam
Aesthetic 미적인... Aesthetically 미적으로..나는 뜻입니다.

Rob
You’re taking this too seriously, Tom. People always want to look their best in photos – it’s just natural!

Tom
But it’s not natural for people to be constantly bombarded by social media posts, is it?

Bolam
Be bombarded by 포격을 받다.. 공격을 받다..라는 뜻인데요. What do you mean by that?

Tom
Well, social media users experience a daily bombardment of perfect images. It’s easy to feel anxious about your own life if everyone else’s seems to be better! I think social media makes it very easy to draw negative comparisons between our own lives and other people’s!

Bolam
Draw negative comparisons 부정적인 비교를 하게 되다..라는 뜻입니다.

Tom
Calm down! If social media is so bad for us, why are so many people using it?

Bolam

Meaning & Use

an adverse effect

An adverse effect is a negative effect. ‘Effect’ is a noun. We can use the adjective adverse here. If we want to describe the verb, to affect, we need to use the adverb adversely.

  • Smoking can have an adverse effect on your health!
  • Forty years of smoking adversely affected his health.

aesthetic

Aesthetic is a noun which is similar to appearance. It is often associated with beauty or things which are pleasing to look at.

  • I like the music on the band’s new album but the aesthetic is terrible. They should change the picture.

It is common to see aesthetic in its adverbial form, aesthetically.

  • The building is very aesthetically pleasing, I just hope it’s warm inside!

[to be] bombarded

To bombard, historically, means ‘to shoot’ or ‘to bomb’. In a modern context, we use it to describe a situation in which we are forcefully and repetitively exposed or subjected to something. We often use this expression in the passive to stress the severity of the results we experience.

  • Every time I use the internet I am bombarded with adverts!

We can use the noun, bombardment, to describe the thing(s) we encounter.

  • I’m so busy at work! Every day I have a non-stop bombardment of emails and phone calls!
